Need Cell Phone help - specifically Verizon!

For those of you who know me, yes, it is true!

I got into a small accident this weekend with my parents in the car. Someone was tailgating me and didn't slow down when the light turned and my back end got hit. She sustained more damage than me, but if my parents hadn't been with me with their cell phone, I would have been s c r e w e d!

So, DH and I have decided it's time to get a cell phone and since most of our family is on Verizon (and my BIL has AT&T/Cingular and his calls are always cut off), we want to stay with Verizon!

So, I need help! I need the most basic plan for the least amount of money possible! HELP!

Go to the Verizon Website - they list all their plans there.

DH and I have the Family Plan which is 700 minutes/month for $60. Then we pay and extra $9.99 for my phone, and then $20/month for unlimited texting.

ETA: Our total bill is usually around $107/month for both of us.

Re: Need Cell Phone help - specifically Verizon!

Did you order this online, or go into a store to buy it?

Are there bad stores out there to talk to reps or ones I should def go and talk to someone?

HOLY SH!T! I will believe it when I see it! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had a basic plan a few years ago before I added Dean and it was $34.99, but I don't know about current stuff.

If it's truly just for emergencies, maybe a pay as you go type phone would be better?

We thought about the pay as you go, but I'm sure we'll use it to cal family that is on verizon, or to call and check in when one of us is out, so we want the extra minutes - like 400 would be suitable!

And I'll have one before Xmas. That was DH's promise cause he doesn't want me to be alone at night without it now, esp since there is still minor damage to my car.

We went to speak with someone at the store, but the website will give you a good base to figure out what you want. It's also good to try out the phones so you can pick one you like.

Verizon's Pay as You Go plans don't really pay anymore. They make it very inconvenient for you to have that. There's a connection fee that they charge you every day even if you don't use the phone.

OMG Chat Icon Chat Icon I don't believe it!

I have the lowest plan with verizon, I believe its 39.99, for something like 400 or 500 minutes. You can do it online or in the store.
Also check out wirefly.com, you can get some really cool cell phones for free on there with new service. Only downside is you have to wait for the phone to come in the mail. If you go to a verizon store, you'll walk out with the phone.

Re: Need Cell Phone help - specifically Verizon!

I think the lowest plan on Verizon is $69.99 for two lines. Your bill will probably be $80 ish per month.

Just so you know Betsy, some companies have employee discounts for verizon so maybe your job or DH's will be eligible.

Also, I know your parents aren't local so if they have Verizon you can use Verizon to Verizon minutes and talk to them. I do it all the time when I talk to my parents in TX. It really helps.

One more thing, there is a Verizon store by the Smithhaven Mall. It is always crowded! But there is a qiosk in the mall by the new wing which connects to the outside stores. There is usually not a line there. The workers are super friendly and helpful. DH and I go there all the time if we need anything. I just went there two weekends ago with a friend and she got some great deals on phones for her and her husband. Try there if you can.

good luck!

Re: Need Cell Phone help - specifically Verizon!

if you go to verizonwireless.com, you can check out all the phones, plans. Probally the lowest plan with a free phone will work great. Or you can visit one of the Offical Verizon Stores (I don't like the 3rd party ones) to see whats going on. Online and in store or two seperate companies so don't see a deal in one place and expect to get it at the other...

Re: Need Cell Phone help - specifically Verizon!

No need to worry about making a wrong decision concerning your contract. you can always adjust your contract at a later point. go to a store and ask about plans.... once in contract, if you over or underestimated the minutes you need, you can always go up or down by swapping plans.... w/o $$ penalties. They only penalize you if you leave verizon completely within the contract term (usually 1 or 2 years).

also, before you go to the store, seriously research cell phones. Many people show up and stare and pick one that is 'cute' or has snazzy features. I got screwed that way with 4 different junkie phones (all motorolla). We've found LG phones, while admitedly less 'sexy', to be MUCH more reliable. I also have heard positive reviews for samsung phones by friends.

Also, when you have fully charged your new phone, make sure your reception is decent at home.... you can cancel a new contract within the first couple days... I'd cancel any provider if home reception was bad.

hope this helps!

Re: Need Cell Phone help - specifically Verizon!

Thanks everyone for all the advice!! It's appreciated! I'll show this to DH for him to read over as well.

I found out that I can get a discount as a state employee - it's 19% off - I just don't know much about plans is all.
