Need convertible carseat recs for 2nd car...
We need to get a new convertible seat for DH's car....don't want to break the bank though!
What does everyone use? I have the Marathon in my car and love it but it's so $$$$
ETA I obviously want one with good ratings but my Baby Bargains is at home and kinda from 2 years ago so I don't know if there have been any other ratings I should know about.
ETA2 Let me also add that DS is 25 months old and already 35 pounds.....so it seems my choices are limited. And when do they graduate from the convertible seat? SHould I consider a convertible to booster seat instead?
HELP!!!!!!

Re: Need convertible carseat recs for 2nd car...
They move from a convertible seat to a booster at age 4 at the MINIMUM. DS was in a 5 point harness car seat until his 6th b-day.
Many convertibles go up to 65lbs or more. Your DS will slow down his growth, so 50 months doesn't automatically mean 70lbs...
I didn't worry about a convertible seat that converts to a booster, since the seat will be 4-6 years old at that point, and most carseats have a 6 year expiration date. I'd rather spend another few bucks and get a new booster, since they need to be in the booster until they are 4'9" or 8yo.

Right, but if I buy, say, another Marathon now, and will need a booster anyway, wouldn't it make sense to but the combo seat now? This way I can kill 2 birds with one stone. Instead of making a big purchase twice? Say he does go in a booster at 4, that's 2 years from now, do I really need to spend another $200-300 bucks on another seat? I'll have a collection by then! And don't forget any additional children.....
And don't they usually outgrow the height long before the weight anyway?

Boosters are like $20-$40 dollars. They aren't elaborate like a car seat. They just raise DC up so the seatbelt goes across their chest, not their neck.
If your DC goes into a booster at 6, that's 4 years from now, and he'll be in it at least until he's 8, so by then he'll have a 6yo seat, so you're pushing the limits on the age of the plastic. If you keep him in the booster past 8, you're going to have a very old booster seat.

Right, but like you said, the boosters are relatively inexpensive so I can in turn , just buy a new booster......whereas....the convertible seat is twice as much as this booster/convertible seat.....
Not being catty, just weighing the pros and cons...and I appreciate your help! And with the size of my son, I would tend to think he might get into a booster before age 6, so if I get the combo seat now, he can be in it until age 7 or so and then get a plain old booster.....
WHY IS THIS SO COMPLEX?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I would do this instead of the Comfortsport. We LOVE our Comfortsport and Christopher still fits in it comfortably at 2.5, but we bought it almost 2 years ago....
If I needed a seat now, Id get he Graco Nautilus, it look slike a great seat.
My parents have a Cosco Scenra in their car and I like that too..

Re: Need convertible carseat recs for 2nd car...
We have a "the first years" seat in our cars, and an alpha omega by safety 1st in my mom's car. we're happy with all of them! they all hold from 5 to 65 lbs, 50" tall.
this is ours, but we have tan:
in Mom's car (i only paid $90 for this seat - there are plenty of online deals.)

Re: Need convertible carseat recs for 2nd car...
If your DC is on the larger side, I'd recommend something like the Nautilus because of the harness to 65 lbs. My son outgrew his Britax Roundabout at 2 y.o. because he was over the height limit. Now at 3 and 40+ lbs, he has outgrown the harnesses in the seats that his grandparents have. Problem is, he isn't old enough for a belt-positioning booster. So now, we need yet another seat, with a 65 lb. harness for the grandparents' cars. At least with the nautilus you don't run into this problem.
ETA- just read the OP and if your son is already 35 lbs, I'd definitely get a nautilus or another seat with a 65 lb. harness. I saw online that Target has one model of the Nautilus on sale for $155 (usu. $180)

Re: Need convertible carseat recs for 2nd car...
35 lbs and 25 months is still way too young for a booster. Transitioning to a booster has more to do with age and maturity than height and weight. You really want to keep him harnessed as long as possible.
What to look for are a shell where the top slots on the harness are high and a higher harnessed weight limit (65lbs preferably)
Best picks under 200: Learning Curve/First Years True Fit Graco Nautilus approx Graco MyRide 65 Evenflo Symphony 65 Evenflo Maestro Safety 1st Apex 65
OK picks (harnesses to 50lbs) Evenflo Triumph Advance Evenflo Titan Eddie Bauer/Dorel 3in1
Not good picks:
Graco Comfortsport Cosco Scenera Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite/All in One - Most "harnessed" boosters like the Evenflo Chase Safety 1st Summit and the Cosco harnessed booster These only go to 40lbs, and your DC is already 35lbs.
Me, personally, the first 3 are my picks.

Re: Need convertible carseat recs for 2nd car...
We had the Graco Comfortsport and both hated the way it tightens. So we both upgraded to the Evenflo Triumph and LOVE it. It is so much easier to tighten the straps. The Comfortsport was so aggravating to us.

Re: Need convertible carseat recs for 2nd car...
We have the Britax Marathon in one car and the Evenflo Triumph in another car, they are both great but for DD #2 we are just getting the Triumph - it is a great carseat for the $$ and it looks like it is more comfortable for DD and it is user friendly.

Re: Need convertible carseat recs for 2nd car...
Graco Comfortsport and CozyCline only harness to 40lbs.
The child in question is already 35lbs. Weight limits on a seat are absolute.
It's a very nice seat, unfortunately it is outgrown rather quickly,

Absolutely!! Go Graco Nautilus! I have my little guy in a Comfortsport in my DH's car and I will need to replace it in a year with the Nautilus....

In the OP's case, I totally agree that the Nautilus is te way to go...
I will say that we really got our money's worth with the Comfortsport, we got it in February of 2008 when DS was 10 months old and it is still going strong and he is over 2.5 and only 29lbs, we should still get a good amount of time out of it
