Need feedback (daycare related but applies to both working and SAHM parents) A little long, but please come in
I am a NYS licensed in home daycare provider, but have been inactive by choice since DS #1 was born because I decided I want to spend some 1 on 1 with my DC's before I re-opened....I have kept up on my licensing requirements every year so that when I do re-open I am all set....Anyway...
Now that I have a DC in school, I realize just how demanding of my time having a school age child can be and I really would like to stay involved at their school as much as possible while they are young without committing to working full time .....
I am thinking about (in the future) becoming a Drop In care facility only... I would be available for both SAHM who have errands to do, doctors appts, mommy time-outs , need to go up to their other childrens school, etc...
I would also be available for working parents whose daycare fell through last minute, unexpected emergencies etc... I may even consider some non-traditional hours (evening) as well ...
This way I can customize around my own schedule when I am available while also providing the public with a safe licensed daycare setting that does not require a commitment or contract (aside from immunization records on file)
Now, for my question FINALLY....
1) Would you have a need for this ?
2) Do you see a need for this in your community? Do you have anything similar where you live?
3) How much would you be willing to pay for this service ?
4) Are there any potential issues you could foresee with this scenario?
Right now its still in the thought process, but wanted to put this out there for feedback...
Thank you for taking the time to answer

You're already my drop in daycare...
I definitely see a need for this type of care. I dont know what I would have done without you these passed few years...

Crashing When I was in Elementary school I went to a woman that only did school age children, before and after care. That way she was available for her children's school during the day. She lived w/in walking distance of the elementary school so we just walked to her house after school. If you are on the bus route, this might also work.

Yes, I would have a need for this.
2) Do you see a need for this in your community? Do you have anything similar where you live?
I don't know if there is anything like this where I live; not that I'm aware of.
3) How much would you be willing to pay for this service ?
I have no idea how much this service should/would cost. I know that if I have something to do at DD#1's school, or something like that where I really can't take DD#2, I think I'd have to consider the cost a part of the "activity" that I need to take part in.
4) Are there any potential issues you could foresee with this scenario?
Just that it could really become a PITA for you...being a drop-in service. Also, you may have to turn people away often, if you already have plans, or if you're full on a particular day. Perhaps if it were more of a "by-appointment" type of service, you'd be able to provide the service while not having to turn people away who might think they can use you at a moment's notice. You might be able to provide that too, but it would have to be more with the understanding of "as available".

As much as I'd love to have the type of service you have proposed, this sounds like it might be a nice option for you!

Re: Need feedback (daycare related but applies to both working and SAHM parents) A little long, but please come in
I did this when I was finishing up my last degree and DS#1 was ~ 1 year old. I paid $8/hour (2006) for three hours a week. i would drop him off and go to the library to study/work.
Daycare is pretty set for me. The only time I need it is if my kids are sick, which i'm not sure you would be interested in? My parents or DH watch our sick kids now.

Re: Need feedback (daycare related but applies to both working and SAHM parents) A little long, but please come in
1) Would you have a need for this ?
Yes, I would have a need for this. My mom watches my DS full time, and it's great. But sometimes she needs a day off, has doctor's appts, or just isn't feeling well. Having a reliable and trusted backup would be very helpful.
I know a lot of my friends look for before/aftercare for school, and offering coverage on school holidays and half days is great.
2) Do you see a need for this in your community? Do you have anything similar where you live?
I really don't know if there is option where I live. I haven't looked into it though.
3) How much would you be willing to pay for this service ?
It would depend on the child's age and how long they would be with you that day. I guess you'd have to decide if you wanted to do it hourly, or a flat fee for a set amount of hours, etc.
4) Are there any potential issues you could foresee with this scenario?
As mentioned above...it could become a PITA for you, unless you have set days/times you are available. If you are a backup daycare, and take kids in last minute, it could mess up your plans for the day. Having scheduled days that you will be home would help you, as well as taking in kids with advance notice (like in my case when my mom wants to go away on vacation or when she has doctors appts).

Re: Need feedback (daycare related but applies to both working and SAHM parents) A little long, but please come in
My husband's job has a day care with a "drop in" service. It is a $100 yearly registration fee and $50 for the day of service. So long as you don't abuse it (it is way less than the regular rate) it is pretty flexible and based on availability of course. You can get an answer as early as 7:30 that morning if you need them.
I think you have a great idea on your hands. I would use it (esp for errands and such).

This is exactly the kind of service I have been looking for.,Someone to drop my daughters off to for a few hrs randomly so I can do some house work or run errands with out them. I have a friend who brings her sons to a woman who does drop off babysitting and I think she charges $8/hr.

This is actually something I considered however I have a few issues with this unfortunately....
My DS's bus-stop, although walkable, is still a bit of a disatnce so often times I drive him to the stop...My mini-van is just about maxed , and I could see it being an issue in inclement weather
Also, as it stands my DS has religion, baseball and hip-hop class pretty much immediately after school (and thats not even with my other 2 DC's activities mixed in )
Wish I was right on the bus-route because it would definately be a great alternative !

Re: Need feedback (daycare related but applies to both working and SAHM parents) A little long, but please come in
Do you live near me? Because this is exactly the type of service we need. DH works for a funeral home PT right now, he has many times where he gets a day or less notice that they need him to work and he needs a service that he could drop the kids to like this. We have set hours we need because of our FT jobs, so we would definitely utilize a daycare that had options like this. As it is, we have a hard time finding places that will take an infant PT, the options are limited. We don't need FT day care and paying for FT care is so expensive. I think if you could do a drop in or even flexible scheduling for PT care that you'd be providing a great service.

Re: Need feedback (daycare related but applies to both working and SAHM parents) A little long, but please come in
They have these all over where I live-I think alot of the reason is there are year round schools-so people may not need daycare for 9 weeks, then all of a sudden their child tracks out and they need care. I would/will plan to use this service if needed in the future.
I think its a great option though I don;t see it as being reliable income..

My good friend is in NC and I always wondered how that worked when the kids tracked out as far as daycare...She is a sahm though...
Fortunately, we are able pay the bills on my DH's salary and his job holds the benefits so for the time being until I decide to start up in full swing again, fluxuating income would be okay

Re: Need feedback (daycare related but applies to both working and SAHM parents) A little long, but please come in
I actually use a licensed daycare now that does this. Sometimes I call for a specific day and she tells me she is full or already has plans outside of the house. But most of the time I call with at least a week in advance.
Right now, per diem is $10 per hour, or $45 for up to 8 hours. She provides lunch and snacks.
I think what you need to think about is if you want someone calling last minute in the morning, or to have it set in advance.

please tell me you are located near me in queens/nassau!
seriously- I would use this service- we have a nanny but there have been like 4 days since she started 3 months ago that I needed coverage and I can't tell you the stress that it caused.... to know that there would be somewhere that I could bring my ds would be wonderful

Re: Need feedback (daycare related but applies to both working and SAHM parents) A little long, but please come in
I am in central Suffolk
As far as having advance notice, I "think" I would actually prefer my business to be almost last minute if that makes sense (though I would not turn down someone who was able to give me advance notice) Operating this way would give me the option of being available/unavailable on a day by day basis which I think would give me the ultimate flexibility I am looking for ...
Basically an on-call sitter in my own home (FTR, I don't care to refer to myself as a sitter)
As the Cat in The Hat would say:
The Cat: You pay this woman to sit on babies? That's disgusting. I'd do it for nothing.

Yes - please move to my town.
For a full day in my area the going rate is $90. There is a daycare around here which offers drop in care.

yes & you should hook up with an in-home daycare provider to be her back up when she is on vacation. My in home was closed for 2 weeks, it worked out fine for us but I could have potentially needed someone.

Ironically my next door neighbor became daycare licensed a few years after I did, so thats actually an excellent idea to network with local providers...
I could be the daycares daycare

Re: Need feedback (daycare related but applies to both working and SAHM parents) A little long, but please come in
I think it's a great idea.
I COULD NOT find a daycare that would meet my needs (1-2 days a week, but super-long hours). My family (bless them) help out... but it's a real problem when something goes wrong.
I could not find many day cares that opened before 7AM.
I cannot tell you how often we have people call out of work because their nanny/babysitter/situation fell through.
I think it's a great idea!
