Need help determining clothing size based just on age...
For a boy turning 2 in January do you think size 3T is alright? I'm going to guess he is average height and weight.
& for a 4 year old (average h/w) is 4T clothing okay or too small do you think?

Honestly, IMO it all depends on the child.
I have a friend who has a 2 year old still wearing 18 month clothes. My DS is 2 and he is wearing 3T for tops and 2T for bottoms... and I just got him a 4T winter coat because I was afraid after reading the weight limits that the 3T would be too small.
If you really can't find out the size from the parent or how much they weigh, I would just make sure to include gift receipts.

When I don't know for sure I get one size above the age, so 3T should be okay for the boy turning 2 but for the boy turning 4 I'd get a size 5.
Most importantly, get gift receipts!!
ETA: it may help to buy mid-weight clothes that can be worn in spring or fall, rather than a sweater that can only be worn in winter, kwim? This way if it's too big he can grow into it.

All i can tell you is my ds is 12 months old and wearing 3t... my cousins ds is 2 1/2 and wearing 2t.... my other cousins ds is 18 months and wearing 6-9 month still

And I am the mom who's 3 year old is true to size, wearing a 3T! But, my 14 month old is wearing 6 - 12 still  I would ask the parents or be sure to include a gift receipt. Some parents prefer not to have their kids "grow into it"  especially since styles change and it may end up being wrong for the season.

Honestly, you can't buy clothing based on their age. My son is two and wears certain clothes in 2T, 3T and 4T...it all depends on the child's size. My nephew is going to be two, and he is still in 12-18 months clothes...

when in doubt call the parent... if you are trying to guestimate for your own children... just know it may be money thrown away come that next season.
my DS is 2 and was wearing 2T at 1 year and he is now in 3T/4T shirts and 2T/3t pants
