need help w this bar

see our bar that is in our basement of a condo we just bought

its black painted paneling YUCK!!!
so in order to make nice we need to strip it, and prime it which can be pricey and take alot of time

Any inexpensive ideas on how to make this better?

I was thinking of purchasing wood panels and just go over the black w it
I saw paneling at lowes

I think the easiest way to fix it, like you mentioned, is to repanel it. Depending on how the panels are put up, your skill level, time available, final outcome hopes, etc., you have several options.

Primary option: Leave old panelling and put new over it. Faster and easier, but the wall will be thicker, so that may make things look off, but without pics, I can't tell.
2nd primary option: remove old panelling. Takes longer, and makes more of a mess, but the final result will probably be a little nicer.

After you decide what to do with the old panelling, you have several options:
New panelling. Simple to put up, but it will be wood panelling, which is fine if that's the look you're going for.
Drywall. More work to put up, since you need to tape and mud the edges, plus paint, but if you want a smoother look, that's the way to go.
Other material. There are wall coverings besides drywall or panelling. I did my kitchen backsplash with 4x8 sheets from http://fasadeideas.com/ You need structure behind it, so I would keep the old panelling up if you go this route.
