i think a hydrangea would look great and add a nice pop of color. i really don't know too much about other shrubs but i'd def. go with some colorful options.

Re: Need ideas for Shrubs - Now with big Picture
What direction does the front of your house face? So many of us had issues with our Hydrangeas last summer with heat and drought. They do better when they have afternoon shade and there's less chance of stress. I have one on the north side of my house that gets sun all day and it looked like cr@p last summer. On the east side of my house, the other two I have did great because they were in the shadow of the house at the worst part of the day. Southern exposure would be bad.
When I plan ahead, I like to do plants and shrubs that will give me three seasons of "interest". Evergreens in the back as a base of color/solidness. Spring blooming shrubs could be Lilac, Forsythia, Quince. Summer I have Mock Orange, Monarda, Butterfly Bush, Roses. Fall I have Anemone, Caryopteris, Ornamental Grass.

I have a small (dwarf?) rose of sharon tree that is really pretty.
Also maybe some ornamental evergreen shrubs.
A red feathery grass would look pretty against the color of your house too (sorry I don't know the technical name but this is a pic).

A dwarf japenese maple would look great there. They bloom with reddish leaves and are such a pretty addition to a front garden. I would probably do a spiral on either side of the columns for balance too.

Re: Need ideas for Shrubs - Now with big Picture
I just got rid of all the big stuff - I want small and manageable - I have a small Japanese maple in my side garden.
I will have a tree on the lawn so I dont want any trees in the flower garden

Re: Need ideas for Shrubs - Now with big Picture
One of my favorite perennials in our front bed is Geum. Mine blooms with pretty yellowish-orange flowers in the spring and summer (just about to start blooming now) and it grows pretty big quickly so it's a nice filler in my planting bed.
I got mine a few years ago at Abby's Parkside Nursery in Wantagh but I've seen them in mail order catalogs.
This isn't a pic of mine but very similar to mine
