need moving advice from been there done that people
hey everyone
hoping to get some advice, but im sure this will wind up being one of those "do what you think works, it doesnt matter either way" questions....
here i go:
we're beginning to pack our things from our apartment to move in with my in laws, to save $ for a house. not sure how long we'll be there.
our furniture will go into storage, and some of our "stuff" will, too. my question in this:
we have random-sized bins, cardboard boxes and a few suitcases.
which containers would you put the following items: towels/linens, breakable/fancy stuff (vases, candlestick things etc), plates/cups/glasses?
im going back and forth with putting the breakables into suitcases, vs. putting them into cardboard boxes; towels/linens into suitcases vs. bins....
sorry this is long- thanks for any advice

My friend said to put all breakables into plastic bins. She felt as though anything she put into cardboard broke. I would also suggest that you wrap them in packing paper or bubble wrap.
My biggest piece of advice would be to LABEL everything according to the room it is suppose to go in.

i disagree with the last statement, sort of. when i moved i labeled everything from where it came FROM (room, piece of furniture, etc..) I can still remember what stuff was in which room in my old house, so i knew moving into this house, where i should put it. of course, things were moved around since, but it was the greatest thing i could have done for myself for unpacking. i knew what could wait and what couldn't.
i invested in plastic bins too. i highly recommend you spend the money on a bunch of them, you'll use them in the future anyway...

I have move probably over 20 times in my 37 years so I feel like I could almost be a professional mover. I normally pack everything in boxes but if you have bins that would work too. As long as things are wrapped they will be fine.

i would put breakable stuff in plastic bins... and also, another thing we did when we moved was we used the towels/linens to wrap the breakable stuff. like we put washcloths between the dishes, or wrapped a bunch of glasses up kitchen towels. we had to pack all of it anyway, and that way we didn't have to buy packing peanuts or find newspapers to roll up or whatever...

I disagree with this slightly, because I have had stuff get broken when I wrapped it in linens.
For the really breakable stuff, like wineglasses, china, etc., I used a plastic bin and then lined the bottoms of the bins with towels. Then, I wrapped the individual glasses in bubble wrap and got those things you slide the dishes into for the china. I did use cardboard boxes for the sturdier stuff, like everyday dishes and corningware type stuff.
I think if you are putting it in storage, the plastic bins are better, because I think fewer things will get broken if you are stacking them for a while.

i would use the bins for stuff you are taking to the your inlaws, they stack nicely and fit into each other to save space.....
i would use boxes for everything going to storage and use packing paper to protect the glass and breakable items......also label everything that went into the box and add an extra label for FRAGILE also

Re: need moving advice from been there done that people
Target has 66 gallon plastic bins on sale for $5 this week (sterlite) They stack great, only drawback is no locking lids, but nothing that a bit of packing tape can't handle.
I'd pack the clothing in suitcases according to season. Easier to take in and out of storage and move it when you need it. Breakables in plastic bins wrapped in bubble wrap. Layer a towel on the bottom and a towel on the top.
I'm anal, so each bin and box were numbered and tagged with a room. I detailed what was packed in each, so this way I unpacked the urgent items first, did the non-urgent stuff when I had time. This will also help if you ever need to get anything out of storage. You'll know in which box/bin to find it.
