Need nap advice from BTDT moms
DS is 11 weeks old. He sleeps pretty well at night a seven hour stretch and then a four hour stretch. He is BF and during the day he eats about every 4 hours.
My problem is napping. In the morning he takes maybe a 30- 45 min nap (usually in the swing), then he takes another 30- 45 min nap after his 11 am feeding (today it was in the boppy pillow next to me on the couch). But that isn't enough. I tried swaddling him which works well at night and putting him in his crib and he kepts fighting it. I tried for 45 min today- I put the mobile on, a lullabye CD, etc...
I need some tips. How can I get my DS to sleep better and longer during the day? He is tired. I can tell but he won't sleep!

Re: Need nap advice from BTDT moms
honestly, he just could be an anti-napper...he gives you that long stretch at night...this could be he trade off. DS only cat napped during the day...but slept through the night so as annoying as it was...it was a fair trade!

You are right Jamie! But what about the fact that he looks tired (eyes red)?

Re: Need nap advice from BTDT moms
ds was NEVER a napper until he was more physically active... one thing that did help was that i would give him his bottle in the bouncy seat... then occasionally i would get an extra nap....
if it is any consolation he now, at 11 months, naps 3-4 hours a day

are red eyes a sign of being tired? I really feel like if a baby is tired...they will sleep.

Re: Need nap advice from BTDT moms
Just wanted to say that I am going through the exact same thing with my 8 week old DD. She use to be a long napper, and just this week she stopped. Also doing the 30 minute naps like your DC. I could set a timer to it. She is also so much more fussy and looks so tired, but won't go down for a long nap! I feel your pain!

Yeah not so much. My ds is the type that will fight napping/sleep. He's always been this way. He could never fall asleep anywhere and he needs to be put down to sleep.
My ds wasn't a good napper from 3-6 months (he was so overtired all the time). Then after some CIO for naps and nighttime, his naps started to lengthen.

Re: Need nap advice from BTDT moms
my DS wasn't a great napper till around 6 months, he would nap a couple times a day before that for also anywhere from 30 min-1 hour. Once he was 6 months he started taking 2 nice naps one AM and one PM. I wouldn't try to much to get him on a nap schedule yet ans he's very young Unfortunately, nothing worked to help lengthen my DS's nap at that time

Re: Need nap advice from BTDT moms
How about tummy time? DD is 5.5 weeks old and tummy time tires her out and then she sleeps on her tummy (in front of me) on the mat for a few hrs
How about right after a feeding? Or maybe baby is still hungry?

Re: Need nap advice from BTDT moms
DD did not have a nap schedule until very recently... she slept in the swing when she wanted to around Liam's age.
I switched her from swing naps to crib naps on more of a scheduke around 5 months.

When mine were little-they would sometimes wake up and just need a binky or to be comforted-then they would fall back asleep

Re: Need nap advice from BTDT moms
I'm sorry Ive
This does make me wonder - how long should we expect them to nap when they do go down? There probably isn't a hard and fast rule is there, when all babies are different.

i agree with this but i wonder about the term "sleep begeting sleep"-meaning the child who naps well during the day will sleep well at night.... my 5 wk old naps well (he's still VERY young i know) but it looks to me that a 7 hr stretch is not in our near future!

Thanks! Maybe I need to wait a few months to see a longer nap. I am not necessarily trying to get him on a nap "schedule" I just feel like some days when he doesn't nap much he is miserable and super cranky (like today... he is doing lots of crying today).

Thanks Jen! I guess I will just deal with the 30 min naps.

Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. Thanks for the tip though.
