Need opinions Re: c-section
Sorry to crash again, but I was hoping to get some BTDT experience.
My baby is breech and it's looking like I'll need a c/s. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to try the version as it just seems like there are a lot of risks. Now they told me I could schedule the c/s for 39 weeks, but I was just wondering if anyone chose to not schedule the c/s, hope the baby turns at the last minute and go into labor on my own?? I know it's a long-shot that he will turn but I feel like I should give him the chance. I know I very well could still end up with a c/s but part of me wants to go into labor and have that "suprise".
So what would you do? I don't even know if they will let me do this (I never asked), but I am assuming they will or at least let me hold off on scheduling it until after my due date.

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
My baby was not breech but sticking in my two cents - i had 2 c-sections, one was after being in labor all night and one was scheduled and I have to say the recovery from the scheduled one was 100 times better. I'm not a doctor but I think the baby is too big at 39 weeks to turn.

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
My DD was breech at 39 weeks and I was scheduled. I think the chance of them turning very late in the pregnancy is slim. Your DC doesn't have much room left, so he/she might stay put. I'm sure you could probably wait it out if your dr agrees. Honestly, I had no problems having a csection. Great recovery, and felt very prepared. It's def not the worst thing. I'll opt for it my second time around. Good luck!

I don't know that this is true. I think that if the baby is still breech at 36-37 weeks they prefer to schedule the section because the baby is big and doesn't have room to move.
Personally, if it was me, I would schedule the section and just deal with it. I don't like the risks involved in trying to labor if the baby is breech, not healthy for anyone.
My BFF's son was breech til 35 weeks and then he turned, but she ended up with a section anyway after 37 hours of natural labor and Mason went into distress, ask her now, she said she should have just had the section to begin with.
Oh and I had a vaginal birth, but I honestly believe that if I were in your shoes, I'd have the section.
ETA: I didn't go into labor either, I was induced.

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
The chances that the baby will flip on its own at that stage is pretty slim. Regardless of that, I never would have waited to go into labor because then I'd end up with an emergency c-section anyway and I think that's much scarier and riskier. I liked knowing that I could just schedule the date with my OB. I didn't have to take a gamble that some other dr. would be on that day and I didn't have to worry about going into labor before having the c-section.

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
my dd was breach also and i had a scheduled c-section... i am also sad that i missed that experience of going into labor... but i honestly think it would be too dangerous to wait an see- what happened if you couldn't make it to the hospital in time and the baby was still breach- imo too many what ifs to chance

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
I guess I have a different opinion My 1st was an emergency C/S after 23 hrs of labor because of fetal distress. The recovery was awful. My other 2 were scheduled repeat C's. I did schedule them for the day before my due date. I wanted as much "cooking time" with them as possible. I did tell my docs that I wanted to wait. They don't have a choice but to let you wait if you want. They can suggest all they want but it is really up to you. Yes, once you go into labor you will be an emergency C because the baby is breach. Labor in most instances will take a good while with your 1st so you may have some leway there and it is slightly more risky but if you want to experience labor at all or if you want to let the baby dictate it's birthday I say go for it! I am a little out there I guess but I am all for not interfering with nature (ok yes I had C/S but it was out of safety)

I guess that's kinda what I was thinking- that it's so wierd to pick the day the baby will be born on!!
But thanks for all your input. I'm having some crazy preggo moments where I think this child will magically flip himself around The stubborn little boy has been in the same position for weeks now so I'm pretty sure it's just me living in my fantasy world I'll talk to my doctor on Friday and see what he says about scheduling the c/s for my due date.

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
Lukie my #3 flipped 5x during my pregnancy. I had a sono at 37 weeks because he was breach at 34 weeks(even though he was already going to be a C/S decided at conception but that little sucker flipped and stayed head down till 40 wks. Anything is possible.

My 2 scheduled ones were amazing compared to the 1st. I think it has to do with your body going thru the stress of labor then the stress of major surgery that makes labor/C/S as bad as it is. I think just surgery is much easier on the body

My doctor told me the same thing....if you labor too long and then wind up with a c-section, the recovery is MUCh worse

I only have 1 DC, but like the pp, I was in the hospital for 5 days and in a surprising amount of pain after my emer. cs. - my priority in this situation would not be the 'experience' of labor but the distress the baby would be in.
tough decision for you! Good luck with what you choose

I agree. when a friends baby was breech they did a sono right before her c to confirm baby was still breech.
ETA: I had a scheduled c-section and it was a great experience. I know its not the ideal birth but I would try not to worry.

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
They will want to schedule it no matter what but you can schedule it closer to your EDD. Mine were both a day or 2 before my EDD, not a week. You may still go into labor on your own. I did with 2 breech babies - I never made it to my scheduled date with either. In a way I think a scheduled would have been better. I had very bad gas pains after both c/s and I think it is partly due to them not being at their scheduled date & time. If it was scheduled, I could have eaten lighter for a day beforehand and fasted for the time frame they recommend right before surgery. I didn't get that far but I am guessing from midnight the night before?

I could see this, I was only in labor for 4 hours before they had to do the C-section, but that was from 10:30 pm to 2 am, I never got to sleep that night and was beyond exhausted for the next few days in the hospital.

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
My friend schedued a C-section two days b/f her due date for the same reason. When she got to the hospital they did a sono and the baby had turned so she went home. So its not too late! The baby can turn!

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
Thanks everyone I definately see the benefits of having it scheduled so maybe I will just stick with the original plan. I have a feeling he might come before then anyway so this may not be an issue It's just hard to adjust to the idea of birth being a surgery instead of labor. But it is what it is and I'll get over it!

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
My daughter was breech and I had to have a scheduled c-section. I can tell you my doc did a sono right before my section was to begin and if my daughter had turned then they would have canceled my section. I don't know if that helps in your decision or not. But you have a right to go into labor if you wish.

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
scheduled c-section all the way! I was in the same situation, and I had GD, and my scheduled c-section went very well. It was a calm, but exciting morning- I'm sure very different than when you go into labor naturally.
ETA: I had a non-stress test & sono every other day up until my CS date to make sure the baby hadn't flipped. I assume this is standard.

Re: Need opinions Re: c-section
Mine was breech We scheduled our C/S but she didnt wait I went into labor anyway. She was STILL breech.
I HATED HATED HATED labor because since she was still breech pain meds were tricky. And since I hadn't Planned on being in the hopsital that night I of COURSE had eaten.
I say schedule it. I know my doc said they'd check position that morning, If i had made it!!!!!!! hah
