Need restaurant recommendations in the city (downtown, tribeca, soho etc.)
Can someone please recommend a place for 3 friends to hand out, eat dinner and have conversation?
Any mainstream cuisine will do... italian, new american, french, etc.

Little Italy is full of great restaurants to hang out in. The vibe is great down there in the summer. You can get an outdoor table and just hang out and have food and drinks. I like SPQR but there are a lot of other great Italian spots.

The Smith is awesome. 3rd between 10th and 11th. I also love Lure Fishbar and Shorty's in Soho.
ETA: I am also going to this place Tree on 1st btw 10th and 11th on Thursday for my birthday. They have an outdoor garden that looks so cute. I haven't been there, but just wanted to add that in.
May I also suggest you go on Open Table and find a reservation that way? I always find that is the easiest way to find a restaurant. GL!

Thank you sooooo much, you guys! I am loving all the suggestions, not only for now but for the future as well!
I am always stumped when forced to come up with a place to eat.

Re: Need restaurant recommendations in the city (downtown, tribeca, soho etc.)
for a relaxing fun chill night when you don't have to be "on", I love Lorelei on the Bowery and Xunta Tapas Bar in Alphabet City.
in Tribeca, I LOVE Fresh and City Hall if I want to spend a buck or two.
City Hall has a great raw bar.
Cabana at the Seaport is also a really fun place with GREAT mojitos and you can eat outside overlooking the harbor.
but I work in Tribeca, so normally I go to dives no one has heard of.
my gals and I have also gone to Red on occassion. which has fairly mediocre mexican food as far as that goes, but great Sangria, and dj and a really fun vibe.
eta: how can I forget Les Halles (John St. locale)...my frenchie and 1 spend more on wine than food when we go there, but it is soooooo good. and I am a Tony Bourdain groupie so it's nice to be in "his" space.

I agree with Shorty's 32-- very good. Also, Otto Enotecca, one of Mario Batalli's restaurants is really good.

Just wanted to tell you that Tree is amazing! Def recommend the duck flatbread - everyone gets it and it's delish! DH had the steak frites and it was great, too. I had the fish and loved it. Have fun!

Ah, so glad to hear ti! I am going tonight with my friends. Unfortunately it is going to be like a thousand degrees outside, so not sure if we'll be able to enjoy the garden. Thanks for the food recs...I'll definitely try the duck!
