Need Suggestions - Birthday Party for Mom
IMO, no one has more information (or access to it) than the LIF family. I really need your help and expertise.
I am throwing a birthday party for my mom around Christmas time (her birthday is the end of December). She is turning 78 years old! My mom is not an "old" 78 though. Many still can't believe she is going to be that age.
Aside from having already reserved a catering hall, I have no idea (other than a DJ) what to "do" at the party to make it a fun experience for everyone.
Weddings are easy (kinda) because they have a certain flow, from bridal party entry to first dances, etc. But how do you conduct a really really fun birthday bash.
Help!

Is there anyone that you can bring in as a "surprise" to her. Like a blast from her past? It would make it exciting for you and memorable for her. Good luck!

Have santa claus there
I think parties at catering halls naturally pace themselves.

I've seen a slideshow done at these kinds of parties- it is cute- choose a memorable song, and have all sorts of significant pictures ...

how big is the guestlist? that's pretty nice of you to throw her a party in a catering hall! I don't mean to pry, but is there some reason you're having a big party for her 78th? (versus say her 80th b-day?). my mom is turning 65 at the end of this month....we're having some people over for dinner & drinks for her.....she's all about the decorations, so as long as we have balloons and some party hats she'll be happy!

You could do both of these things, kind of like a "This is Your Life" type of deal. Are you hiring a DJ? You can have pics and snippets of family movies and such on the screen then someone hiding by the screen saying a few words and the the person can come out and greet her. And maybe you can find a long lost relative or school chum as the surprise.

Re: Need Suggestions - Birthday Party for Mom
maybe you can hire a singer 9does she like anyone) and i love the santa idea
also ask the dj to brong and mc to get the crowd up and do all the dumb dancing no one wants at the wedding
maybe you can make a poster board with pics of your mom through the years and everyone gets a card and has to guess her age then maybe have a prize per table(the CP) or 1 prize overall
ask some old HS friends to do little speechs of funny times
find out about doing a slide show of pics set to music of your mom through the years

Re: Need Suggestions - Birthday Party for Mom
Honestly, I think I would just let it be a nice party and NOT overplan it. Let people mingle, eat, dance, and have a great time.
If you want to do one or two nice things for her (like a slideshow or a speech), that's awesome. Otherwise, though, people can and will entertain themselves. It will be a chance for her to be with her whole family and lots of friends, I imagine. I'd want to make sure there's plenty of time for her to mingle and enjoy those people and not too much time taken up by activities, presentations, etc.

If money isn't too much of an issue, how about a photobooth? I wanted it for the wedding but didn't and want to have a party just so I can have it! LOL.
I think its fun and it gives guests something to do during the party. I think thats the only issue because like you said, weddings have a natural flow.
Definitely love the slideshow idea, too.

I got married the year she turned 75, so there wasn't money for a wedding AND a birthday bash. And I don't want to wait til her 80th because (God forbid) suppose she doesn't see an 80th birthday?

We had my mom's 65th birthday at Milleridge Carriage House w/ a DJ. We also had a very moving (not a dry eye) slideshow - really a tribute to her - and flew her brother in from Vegas as a surprise.
