Fruit basket or cookie tray. They'll probably have people back at the house and it's nice to have something there to have with coffee, etc.

How about a donation to a charity that is near and dear to the family in the name of the deceased?

I would try to send like a cold cut platter or something like that. When my grandmother died, we got so many fruit baskets and we couldn't eat it fast enough.

Re: Need suggestions... regarding sympathy gift
My father passed away in November and I can tell you that we received so much. The best thing by far was the people who sent in the hot meals from places like Bens, Mamma Lombardis, wrap shops, etc... It was perfect bc you didnt have to do a thing as the mourners and guests that came in could eat food as well. The fruit baskets went moldy bc there were so many and the cakes and cookies were there for weeks. I suggest real food by far.
