Need your advice - xmas gift related
As I'm sure you all know I was laid off from my job a week before xmas. It definitely put a hinder on xmas. After getting the news, I thought it would be best to tell DH we should not exchange gifts this year - and only get for the kids. Well..unfortunately he left his email open and I saw a confirmation of an order he made for my gift and felt he should send it back. So without telling him, I just said I think it's best you return whatever you bought me blah blah blah.
Long story short - I bought him t-shirts, boxers and pj pants (what he needed) because I felt bad not getting him anything (he really deserved it). I go to open my gift and I paused, mainly because I knew he hadn't done what I asked. I opened it and it was a really nice Coach handbag I had asked for. I tried so hard not to cry because I knew he had purchased it before all of this mess happened and how excited he was to have done it. I then thanked him for the gift of course.
A few days later I had a talk with him and told him I hope he wouldn't take offense to what I was going to say, but I thought it might be better for us to return the gift he bought me because: a) I have no where to use it now - it was a work bag b) the money he spent on it - can be used towards a bill or buying the crib we need to get for our DD coming in April.
He told me he had a feeling I would say that, and wanted me to know that if I wanted to keep it, I could because "eventually" I'd get a job where I'd be able to use it, but he felt he wanted to leave it up to me to return it or not.
Would you return it?

I would return it and then buy it again when finances were better. DH has bought me gifts that I've returned because he spent a lot of money on them and at the time we were struggling and couldn't really afford it. It was very sweet of your DH to do though!

Unless I was seriously needing the cash, then I wouldn't return it.

Prior to the lay off we weren't seriously needing the cash, but circumstances have changed and the reality is we now have to adjust our way of living because my salary is more than 1/2 gone. Aside from our bills, we also have to get a crib for our baby that is coming along with other necessities, and I feel having a $500 bag is pointless at this point. Thanks for your advice though..I really do appreciate it.

Re: Need your advice - xmas gift related
it seems your DH wants you to have a nice bag - what about returning it for a less expensive, smaller one, and put the remaining $$ towards a crib.
this way you still have a gift from your DH

Re: Need your advice - xmas gift related
what about returning it for a diaper bag?
and that should also give you some left over to put towards other baby needs?

Sorry if I come off as harsh or anything. I was/am in the situation, so I know. It's great to have nice expensive things(and I loooove handbags, lol). But sometimes in life our priorities and needs change and we have to compromise. I would just buy the bag another time. Good luck with everything

I think you should return it - it sounds like you won't enjoy it at all because of the circumstance. You could always get another one later on.

Re: Need your advice - xmas gift related
I like the idea of exchanging it for a baby bag and using the leftover toward the baby's needs.

Re: Need your advice - xmas gift related
return it, but write yourself an IOU.
get it after you get a job and get your baby settled.
don't exchange it for a baby bag. you dh got it for YOU, his working woman wife, not his baby's mama. don't smudge the two together just yet

Re: Need your advice - xmas gift related
Knowing how exspensive babys can be.. I would return it .. but only if the cost of shipping it back wasnt alot. If it was going to cost close to half the price of the item then why bother returning it.. b/c your pretty much tossing money out the window and not having anything for it. If you could return in person saving you from loosing any money then i would do that.
