Neighbor issues - help - GET THIS UPDATE

Every house on my block has a driveway. The people across the street (directly across from me) don't like us because we bought the house - yep, they wanted to buy our house and move across the street lol.

They were occassionally parking their big green ugly Mr.T van in front of my house. Fine.

Well, my cousin parks in front of my house bc she works in NYC and this way she doesn't pay for commuter parking, she walks to the train from my house. She is often gone a few days in a row and we keep an eye on her car.

So, for the past few weeks the neighbors have been parking Mr.T van or their other truck in front of my house every day and every night.

Why don't they use their driveway, you ask? Because it is filled with CRAP. They have an old car, a boat and construction material. I have lived here 3 years now and since they got that old car this has been going on. They have no room in their driveway to park the 2 trucks.

It aggravates me that they are there. I know it is a public street, but is there anything I can do about this? What can I say to them? I can explain about my cousin, I guess...I mean, hardly anyone parks on the street, so there are plenty of other spots. Chat Icon

Put cones in front of your home. They will get the hint.

Re: Neighbor issues - help

I would suggest parking their ugly azz cars in front of their own house. I don't think that's unreasonable.

either cones or big black garbage bags full of whatever in front of your house. it'll work and they'll get the message.

Re: Neighbor issues - help

It depends on what town you live in..b/c many towns will not allow homeowners to leave a boat and other junk in their driveway.....try calling the town...maybe they will be forced to clean up their property....which will also free up some driveway space for them...GL

True...our town does have rules like that - our other neighbors had to paint their garage or be fined.

My DH said we should start parking our cars there for a while..the garbage bag idea is good too...

They do park one of their trucks in front of their house but they alternate that one and the MR.T one in front of mine!

thanks everyone!

The cones and garbage idea sound good.

I do know that our neighbors previously complained to the Town about the previous owners of our house cause it's on record about the mess they used to have with junked up old cars, etc.

Re: Neighbor issues - help

i have a neighbor just like yours.... omg the junk in their driveway not to mention the ummm i think it use to be a car in the backyard.Chat Icon they have 2 boats in front of their house, a car under cover, 3 personal cars, and a garbage trailor in front of their house. the town has removed others in the past but have not been back in about 3 years and it's all building up again. as for your neighbors i would say something nice to give them the hint and also put something there to somewhat block them. good luck

Re: Neighbor issues - help

while i do agree it is annoying - you don't own the sidewalk anymore than they do.

Putting cones or a garbage bag there is obnoxious, IMO, and will only serve to foster the tension. When I see cones on a public street, I move them and park my car.

Plus, if you did the garbage thing, they sound obnoxiuos, you may find the garbage spilled all over the lawn.

Sadly, I don't know what you can do. Technically, it's their property, so they can have the driveway anyway they want, unless it's causing a public disturbance, or a fire hazard. If it is, then by all means, make a few calls and see if you cant get that straightened out.

On the days when you know your sister will need the spot, can you put your car in the street and then switch with her when she comes?

Re: Neighbor issues - help

Cones? Really?? Believe me I can relate in a way. I have some neighbors who have annoying car set ups... but before I'd put cones, I'd talk to them. Cones just sounds so passive aggressive and if they really dont like you bc of the house thing, why would that deter them? Like you said, its a public street. I would think most people would just move them, esp if they are parking there on purpose I'd say something to them if you want to address it. Can you see their house from your property? If so maybe your sister can park there.

We have a guy that parks in front of our house a lot. When DH was annoyed, he put our car in that spot & we had our friends pull in the driveway.

Re: Neighbor issues - help

My parents have issues with their neighbors, so I know how you feel. The last thing that you should do, though, is talk to them bc they will probably just get their back up. I would just wait until they move their ugly van, and then park another car there consistently until they get used to parking elsewhere. It really is not fair that every day your view is blocked by their car. Also, I wonder if since you pay taxes on the amount of your property lining the street, if you could talk to the town about how as a taxpayer, you are losing your view and parking privileges when they could easily park in front of their own house. I would do so without telling them though. Good Luck~!

Re: Neighbor issues - help

I would talk to code enforcement in your Town about the trash and junk in the driveway. Other than that, I don't think there is a whole lot you can do.

It's a public street and people can park wherever they want to. I agree that asking them not to park in front of your house will just lead to more problems with them.

Re: Neighbor issues - help - GET THIS UPDATE

uuhhhh..guess what.

They now have FIVE cars / boat that take up space. They just bought a new car. And their little daughter was petting Casey and said "Did you see my mom's new car?" I said uh huh...is she getting rid of her old one? She said "nope!" Chat Icon

So now they have:

-a boat in the driveway
-an older car in the driveway
-a GMC truck on the street
-a new car on the street
-the MR.T van on the street.

The 3 that are on the street are all by me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Park your car in the street. Or have your cousing park in front of their house if they are taking up the space in front of yours.

Re: Neighbor issues - help - GET THIS UPDATE

we have the same issue....but it is more of just a crowded street with us....but our guy across the street has like 6 cars! They always park in front of our house....but 2 of the cars are in front of his house and NEVER move....they both had flats..I say had b/c they just fixed them....nothing really to do i mean it is a public street....but we park our cars in fron of our house whenever we can or we park one car so it is a lil further than our driveway (not big enough to park behind or in front w/out blocking a driveway...I think they are getting the hint.

NOT FUN
