neighbor $ situation - update!

We recently removed a very large tree from our driveway..

prior to doing that, we'd notified our neighbor on the other side of the driveway that we we needed to do this - more as a courtesy than anything.
They were glad we were removing the tree since it was huge and hung over their house as well - and they offered to split the cost with us. We said they didn't need to, but they insisted and it was left at that. We see one of them all the time while commuting and we're always chatting about our respective home improvement projects, and it was mentioned several times that they'd split the cost with us.

When we got estimates, we told them how much it was coming in at and they were fine with it.

When the tree was taking down we gave them a lot of the wood from the branches to use for firewood (we kept tons for ourselves too).

A week or so after tree came down, the husband (who we see the most since we often commute together) said oh, you have to tell me how much it was again and i'll check the finances to see if we can get you your money.

That was about 2 months ago. we've seen him many many times since then and it hasn't come up.

do we approach them yet again? what do we say?
we're generally friendly with them, but its not like we hang out together or anything so we're not sure how to actually approach it without coming across as bugging them

we're talking about $2,000 that we could really use (and were counting on)

UPDATE: ok, this is bizarre. came home tonight and there was a check in our mailbox with a very nice note.
Either that was a HUGE coincidence or my neighbor is on here, and if that's the case, Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: neighbor $ situation

Honestly, I wouldnt do anything.

While its nice that they offered to split the cost, it was your tree, on your property, and therefore your cost to bear, unfortunately.

If they offer, they offer, if they dont, they dont.

At least thats what I would do.

I agree. You said you told them as a 'courtesy' anyway....implying you didn't even expect them to split it

yeah I def. would not say anything and if one day they give you the money then Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm sure they meant it at the time, but it probably dawned on them that it wasn't there responsibility. to ask would just be way to awkward.

You should ask for your firewood back tho Chat Icon Chat Icon

Agreed. It was very considerate of them to offer and they should follow through, but if they don't, they don't. I don't think it would be appropriate to say anything.

I guess i'm having a hard time understanding why people are saying not to bring it up to them. Why is it inappropriate? They offered several times, completely unasked for. It's not like it was just mentioned in passing once - it was many times. They told us to let them know how much it would be, which we did.

Of course i realize that the tree was our responsibility and we'd have paid for it ourselves regardless.. but i honestly don't get the reasoning why we are supposed to just let it go

He said he would check his finances, maybe they realized they don't have the money???
I dont know that you should be depending on the money being you were going to have the tree removed before they offered to help with the cost.

It's been 2 months now which makes it more ackward to ask I feel. If you really are depending on the money and feel strongly that they offered to help with the cost, I would just ask.

think he wound up realizing they didn't have/want to spend the extra money and that's why he didn't give it to you. I said to let it go bc you were going tocut the tree anyway , just avoid uncomfortable situation KWIM?

I think bc its really not his problem, and he doesnt technically owe you anything, whether or not he offered. I think the ball should be in their court to offer, maybe they just dont want too, maybe they dont have the money, maybe they just lied all along. Who knows. I dont think you should ask though bc its something you needed to have taken care of for your house......it really has nothing to do with them. If they choose to give you the money (its not like they arent aware they offered) then BONUS for you, if not, they arent obligated too, which is why I dont think you should approach them. If they owed you the money, either contractually, or bc they tree was half on their property, thats one thing. It wasnt though, so I just think it would make things awkward.
