Neighbors and fences
We haven't met the neighbors who have fences that border ours yet. We have a standard 6 foot stockade that is in sorry shape. It's not an eyesore yet but it is warped in places.
We plan on becoming dog owners next year and need to get the entire yard fenced with something appropriate for that.
I found the permit for the last time the fence was put up - in 1993. Although we kept in touch with the previous owners, they weren't the ones who put up the fence so I don't know how the neighbors reacted.
The neighbors next door just put a huge second floor on top of their house so I don't think they'll be that enthused with replacing the fence anytime soon. But one whole side of their property is using 'our' fence.
If you've had some fence changes between you and your neighbors, can you tell me:
-If you or neighbor decided to put up the fence?
-If it was you, what kind it was and approximate cost if you wouldn't mind?
-If you discussed the fence prior to it being installed? If you/they outright asked for a 'donation' or just waited to see if you/they would offer?
-And if you/they ultimately helped financially.
I guess it all depends. Both neighbors have the same 6 foot stockade so if one portion is completely different, they're either going to be forced to change theirs or live with a mismatched yard.

Re: Neighbors and fences
We replaced our fence with wood stockade through our landscaper when we were having a ton of other work done, so I don't remember the cost of that alone. We didn't let the neighbors know ahead of time, nor did we ask them for money. They both had their own fences up.
One neighbor was trying to get the landscaper to not put in a retaining wall on our side and just take down his crappy fence and put our fence on his wall. We said no since we didn't want it to be an issue when he sold that suddenly it was his fence and we'd have to put in more sections again if the new owner decided they wanted a different type of fence.

Re: Neighbors and fences
We put up a new 6ft stockage fence and did not ask the neighbor for anything including their approval. It cost about $3500 dollars.

Re: Neighbors and fences
Thanks ladies.
I envisioned something different than a stockade but now that I think about it, we don't intend on staying here forever.
It would alleviate a lot of issues if we put up another stockade. That price doesn't sound so bad, and I'm willing to bet that my plot is smaller than yours.
If I did that, I probably would just mention it to them first. But since it matches the current fence, not go overboard.
Thanks!

Re: Neighbors and fences
We recently did a PVC fence all the way around.
Our neighbors on one side also did a PVC and we agreed to pay half of the one side.
On the other side my neighbor paid to have their wood fence taken down and also just paid me their half of the PVC fence on the side between our house and theirs.
I didnt bother contacting the neighbors behind me because I do not know them, but my sister did when she did her fence and she had all the neighbors give her money towards the fence.
