Nervous about putting up X-mas tree!

OK I love to decorate for the holidays and we always put our Christmas tree up in the living room. This is our first year with our dog Jersey. She's still a puppy (1 yr. old) and I am afraid she is going to demolish our tree. Does anyone have any advice on how to put it up without having her go nuts? SOmeone suggested putting the tree up with no decorations for a while so she gets used to seeing it there first. The only space it fits cannot be blocked off by a gate. TIA!

I'm a little nervous too, since we got Riley, her and Morgan love to run around together.
I think I might put it up for a week with no decorations and see what happens and if all goes well, then decorate.

We're nervous too since Daisy is till in puppy stages. We're either going to eliminate ornaments from the bottom branches, or buy a small decorative fence to put around the tree to keep her out.

Re: Nervous about putting up X-mas tree!

we were nervous when we first got char but we just put her "correction can" near the tree so she knows that the tree is off limits.

the can is a coffee can filled with pennies and we shake it at her when she does something wrong so she associates that loud noise that she hates with whatever behavior we don't want her to do. then, after a little while, we were able to put it on the stairs if we didn't want her going up there, on the couch if we didn't want her jumping on it, etc.

she is afraid of it and then knows to not go near it - hence, not go near whatever we put it on/near.

maybe that will help you?

you could also try leaving the tree up naked for a few days so that the dog gets used to it and then put the ornaments on.

We're nervous too because our puppy loves to pull branches off of tree and bushes outside! But the holidays must live on and we will try to be on top of him as much as possible!!!

Great suggestion thanks!!!!! I was thinking of leaving the bottom bare and spraying the tree blanket with bitter apple too. I like the can idea and will do that too. I am nervous with my Rottie Pup, she is always watched though or gated so unless we are not paying attention she should be okay...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
