neutering my dog
I am bringing Shamrock to get neutered on Thursday. My vet says they will keep him overnight and I will pick him up on Friday. When he comes home what should I expect? How long will he have that cone on? How long will it take for him to heal?
TIA

Re: neutering my dog
I think he should be fine if they are keeping him overnight. Our Pomeranian was kept all day and when we picked him up, he just came right out of the room and was COMPLETELY fine. Never would think anything happened to him.
Our cockapoo on the other hand, they kept him for a few hours (a different clinic) and when we went to pick him off, I guess all the anesthesia hadn't worn off because he was SO out of it. Didn't even recognize us and was crying in his sleep. It really broke my heart since the new place was my idea because it was several hundred dollars cheaper. The pup was FINE though by that night. He will sleep a lot.
If you can, get him microchipped at the same time. We did with the pomeranian but with the cockapoo we did it at another time without being under (just local anesthesia) and he cried bloody murder. So traumatizing for me.

Re: neutering my dog
May not have the cone. My dogs were not give a cone. Will be groggy, but should be ok (if a male). It's much easier for them.
He is staying overnight? Does someone stay there all night with them?
My vet sent our male and female both home same night since no one is in their office at night. They did just fine.
Also as above poster said, if you want to get him chipped, that is the time to do it so he won't experience the pain.
He will do ok.

Yes we are getting him microchipped at the same time. I have to find out if someone is there at night. I am feeling a liitle better about it - was afraid he will be out of it for days. thank you!!

Re: neutering my dog
When my previous dog was neutered I refused to leave him overnight because no one was there. I had to sign a waiver but I took him home. He was a little groggy but he was fine. He didn't wear a cone but we watched him just to make sure he didn't mess with the stitches. All went very well, recovery was extremely quick, and I was much happier having him home with me. (He was 8 years old at the time too.)

Right b/c if there was an emergency, no one was there anyway! So at least if you had one and he was with you, you could take him somewhere.
But the reality is it's a very easy surgery most times. My male was upset when we picked him up and a bit that night, didn't want to walk. But by the next day, he was back to himself. My female took an extra day or two with being cranky, but then was fine. But I was a nervous mom with them....they did great though.

Re: neutering my dog
my dog was fine afterwards....he didnt have a cone and he was only there for half a day if even that..i had to drop him off early in the morning and they saud i would pick him up in the late afternoon but i got a call only a couple of hours afterwards asking me to come and get him....he didnt like being locked up in a a cage so when he came out of the anestisia he started going crazy in the cage and they thought he would rest better at home...we came home and he slept for a few hours and by the next day he was back to himself...the hardest part was trying to keep him calm and not play to much so the stitches would heal
