Never heard of this but here goes... There is an "Air Quality Warning" in effect
I get emailed weather alerts and got the below warning today. It actually does affect me because I was planning on gardening tomorrow and I do have asthma. I just have never heard of this before.
Affected Jurisdictions: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Westchester Counties
Headline: MULTIPLE COUNTIES: AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM SATURDAY TO 1 AM EDT SUNDAY
THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION HAS ISSUED AN AIR QUALITY HEALTH ADVISORY FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES... SUFFOLK... NASSAU... RICHMOND... KINGS... QUEENS... NEW YORK... BRONX... WESTCHESTER...ROCKLAND...ORANGE...PUTNAM. IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM SATURDAY TO 1 AM EDT SUNDAY. AIR QUALITY LEVELS IN OUTDOOR AIR ARE PREDICTED TO BE GREATER THAN AN AIR QUALITY INDEX VALUE OF 100 FOR THE POLLUTANT OF GROUND LEVEL OZONE. THE AIR QUALITY INDEX... OR AQI... WAS CREATED AS AN EASY WAY TO CORRELATE LEVELS OF DIFFERENT POLLUTANTS TO ONE SCALE. THE HIGHER THE AQI VALUE...THE GREATER THE HEALTH CONCERN. WHEN POLLUTION LEVELS ARE ELEVATED... THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH RECOMMENDS THAT INDIVIDUALS CONSIDER LIMITING STRENUOUS OUTDOOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS. PEOPLE WHO MAY BE ESPECIALLY SENSITIVE TO THE EFFECTS OF ELEVATED LEVELS OF POLLUTANTS INCLUDE THE VERY YOUNG, AND THOSE WITH PRE-EXISTING RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS SUCH AS ASTHMA OR HEART DISEASE. THOSE WITH SYMPTOMS SHOULD CONSIDER CONSULTING THEIR PERSONAL PHYSICIAN.

Interesting...can you let me know where you sign up to get these alerts? I looked at the DEC website but couldn't find it. My son has asthma and I've never seen this..thanks!

My nephew also suffers terribly from asthma, I feel your pain. 
I've been on this list for years, this is the first time I remember seeing it. You can customize it for certain types of alerts and areas:

They always issue these during the summer when it is going to be very hazy, hot, humid!

Exactly. They are out often enough. I pay attention to these alerts everytime. I have asthma. SInce my DH deals with issuing these alerts, he typically warns me.

my local news plays it each morning, its great info to have.
It makes me keep an extra eye out on my kid at the park.

As an asthmatic, I can say that these warnings have been around a long time and are usually on hot, humid and hazy days. Thanks for posting!

We get these kind of warnings all most daily in the summer here in Dallas. The air polution makes it yucky

We get these quite a bit out here in Rhode Island, and when there is an air quality alert day, all public buses are free
