never thought I would say this

But I think I need to get an E readerChat Icon
Ereader is not something I ever even considered, I LOVE reading an actual book, love holding it in my hand, smell of it, changing a real page , instead of a virtual one.... But I think it would be beneficial to me and a lot more more convenient to get one ....
Anyway
could you share which one you have, do you like it and would you recommend it?
I will do some research later (after DD goes to sleep) but wanted to get some insight from owners of ereaders.

Thank you

Re: never thought I would say this

DH bought me a kindle for xmas and I love it...I also love reading actual books but I find the kindle convienient, light (fits in my purse) and I love that I could just download books instantly.
I def recommend an ereader!

Re: never thought I would say this

I felt the same way... and then i realized that that wasnt true when i got the Nook... it was a 30th birthday gift from my parents...

im into gadgets and stuff, but i never wanted one of these things... but the Nookcolor has wifi and its touch screen... totally up my alley as far as getting new toys goes lol

I would recommend either the regular Nook or the Nookcolor...

I know a few people with the Kindle too and they like it also...

I have like 60 books on the nook... never read so much so quickly in my life... i love just being able to have the book immediately...

Re: never thought I would say this

I have the Nook and I love it.

The only thing that bugs me is that I can't sort my books and there's no backlight. I downloaded the update where I can create shelves for them, but I'd much rather be able to sort by author.

I don't know anything about the Kindle.

So if I were to buy again my criteria would be:

1) Ability to download from a public library

2) Ability to sort ebooks

3) Option to read with a backlight or without - I understand it could be straining to read constantly with a backlight but I would like it for occasional night reading in bed

*Barnes and Noble does offer a Nook cover with a light attached to it but it got bad reviews so right now I just keep my lamp on.

I have the Nook.

Pros:
I love the look of it
I like the bottom touch screen
It has sudaku and chess games

But mostly, I don't have to buy books all the time. It's accepted for the Local Library format. That really was the deciding factor to go with the Nook over the Kindle. I can get books for free with the library. And honestly, I would have stopped or reduced my reading if I had to buy ebooks all the time.

Cons:
no sorting of my books but I mostly rent them from the library so it's not too much of a big deal

hmm, I wonder if Kindle has all the stuff you listed . I'm going to go do some research now and decide (before DH gets me something else for our anniversary Chat Icon )

The Kindle is the only e-reader that does not allow for library borrowing. It does allow for borrowing among Kindle owners, but it's limited. The Nook also allows that among Nooks with the same limitations - which are imposed by the publishers.

Most e-readers are not backlit, as the e-ink screens are supposed to be much easier on your eyes than a backlit device (like a computer or iPad). The NookColor is backlit.

The classic Nook's latest software upgrade added bookshelves which allow for sorting, you can also view your library by author, title and I think something else. It's not perfect but much better than before. I have a few hundred books in my library and can find them really quickly now that I have them sorted as I prefer. I haven't touched a NookColor but I'm pretty sure I've heard it allows for the same sorting.

I played around with the Kobo (from Borders) about a year ago but I don't remember if they have a way to sort books.

I have the Kindle and love it. I got it before the Nook came out so I didn't have the comparison. Yes I wish I had the library to borrow from, that limits my books.

I don't know if the nook offers this, but I can sync between my kindle and my droid and read on my droid and pick up where I left off on my kindle. Very helpful when I don't have my kindle around. I love being able to read on my droid.

Re: never thought I would say this

I was very anti-nook for the same reasons as you but my book collecting habit just got to be too much. We literally couldn't fit my books in the apartment anymore and I still have four boxes in storage!

Eventually I just said screw it and got one and I have to tell you I love it! Not only do I no longer feel guilty about my growing book collection but it has turned me on to writers I didn't even know existed. I highly recommend the Nook!

Re: never thought I would say this

I have the iPad. I use iBooks on it and love it.

I was the same as you in thinking that I would miss the actual book, but I love being able to do so much on the iPad and be able to read at a moments notice, in the dark, on the train, etc... it is fantastic!

Good luck!

Have and love the Nook Color.

I can read a book a day. I can't afford to buy from Amazon. With the Nook I am able to borrow from Suffolk County libraries.

It is wifi accessible so I use it all the time for facebook and lif.
