new apartment - who to kiss up to?

We closed on a new apartment last month, and now are in the processing of finding a contractor for renovations.

Won't be finished before baby comes in June, so I'm anticipating a July move in.

Once we move in, in July, should we go to the neighbors with some cookies or something?

Which neighbors?
Across the hall and next door only?

do the same for the super and the door man?

What should we give them?
Box of Entenmanns cookies? for everyone?

Something else?

Thank you

This and with a new born, I would probably swing by the people on either side of you and above & below you just to introduce, say hi and kiss up a little in advance of the crying they'll likely hear (I don't know how soundproof your apt is).

I assume there are multiple door men (there is a door man 24x7) and multiple supers. (theres like hundreds of apartments between 2 buildings.

How much would be a good tip?

Thank you

Just a "hi" ?

no need for a bribe of some sort?

thank you

I think a friendly, "Hi, we're your new neighbors" visit is perfect and all that is necessary. You don't need to bribe any neighbors (next to, above, below, whatever) because you have an infant! Everyone knows that infants cry a lot at various times throughout the day and night. With a new baby, you'll have tons of stuff to spend $$$ on! If anything, as the new person, people might bring you cookies/welcome gift. I agree with a tip to the super and doorman.

Most likely only one super - I would give maybe 50 to the super and maybe 100 bucks to the super in an envelope and say it is for the doorman so he can split it.
Anything really is a nice gesture.

But why would anyone tip the doorman and super when they first move in?? Ok if they help you move in I understand but for no reason. I tip during the holidays. Just being friendly and introducing myself is what I have always done and I've never had an issue.

I would actually tip the doorman and super something as soon as you close. I assume with all the work going on having them on your side will help with all the complaints they will get from the noise of the renovations. There is nothing you can do about it but it will still interupt others in the building so anyone you can sweet talk prior to work starting would be good imo.

Re: new apartment - who to kiss up to?

Tipping the doorman and super IMMEDIATELY gets you in their good graces.
You would be surprised how much smoother life is w/ the doormen and super on your side.

and honestly, not just tipping them, but being NICE to them.
Our doormen used to crack up laughing b/c every single time they opened the door I said Thank you - if I was carrying a million things I'd Thank them x10 for helping me etc etc ........I don't know, I guess most people have the attitude like "this is youir job" .........and technically it IS ......but that's no reason to treat someone like youir servant, and I think a lot of people (at least in Manhattan) do treat the doorman that way -

If the super was coming up to fix something or change a lightbulb (yes, living in the city I never even changed a lightbulb myself Chat Icon ) I'd always offer him a drink or whatever if I happened to be home, and if not, I'd leave him cookies or something.

Do you HAVE to do these things? Of course not. But I do it now with contractors too .......these people are coming in to your home. They are working in your home ......if they LIKE you, it's a bonus for you in the long run Chat Icon

I don't think youi need to bribe your neighbors .......but I agree it would go a long way if you stopped by and said hi and let them know you just had a baby etc.

Usually you tip the super and doormen during the holidays. If your super helps do anything with the move, or fixes something in your apt, then you can tip him then. I personally think it would be strange to tip your doormen when you first move in. Cookies or brownies is "traditional" for doormen.

I think it would be nice to introduce yourself to your neighbors, but no need to preface with anything about a crying baby. Honestly, unless your apt has unusually thin walls, nobody will hear your baby. And even if they do, they know it's a baby and you can't really do much about it!

We don't have a doorman but we do tip the super whenever he comes in to help us with anything. We will also tip him and give him some sort of baked good when the holidays come around.
