New Car question...
Not looking to buy one obviously, was just curious...
How much $$ difference is it between the Invoice price of a new car and the MSRP sticker price? Is it hundreds or thousands? Thanks!

Re: New Car question...
Depends on the price of the car - usually thousands.
Also, note that there is also almost always a difference between the dealer's listed "invoice" price and what the dealer actually paid for the car... (I dated a guy who sold cars a long time ago...)
Edited to clarify -- the dealer usually pays much less than invoice for the car.

Re: New Car question...
For us, it was thousands. We bought a 2008 Nissan Xterra way below the sticker price. It was the end of the month and they were dying to meet their sales quotas. And they were practically giving away the SUVs because it was right in the middle of the time when gas was at it's most expensive and no one was buying trucks or SUVs so they had tons on the lot. We really lucked out.

we saved about $10-$12K on our mustang for similar reasons
we bought a convertible in January and it was the end of the month
of course by the time my DH upgraded it-- I doubt we saved much

Re: New Car question...
You should pay no more then $500 over the invoice price and you can find that at KBB.com

This may be the 1st time I have ever disagreed with you, Kara.
Dealer invoice IS what the dealer pays for the car, unless there is incentive money, which isn't often.
It really depends on the car. As a general rule, the bigger and more expensive the car the bigger the markup. EX: A Ford Focus or equivalent has about a $600 difference between invoice and sticker. However, a Ford Explorer has about $2000 in markup.
There are usually rebates offered from the manufacturer as well. Good to know before shopping. You can see them on any manufacturer website.
I have been in the car business for the past 10 yrs in sales, finance and the banking end

Re: New Car question...
Thanks!
I was asking because in the future if things get better financially I would like to get a new Toyota Sienna and with my job there's a Toyota Dealership that offers the employees here a discount of 1% over invoice price. I just didn't know if that was a good deal or not. For the one I'm interested in is from $25K-$28K MSRP price. Obviously I want to spend the least amount possible, I just didn't know if it was a good deal or not.

Then I guess I robbed the last three dealerships I purchased from -- b/c I've purchased all of my cars for below invoice, using the negotiating tips I got from my ex...

Re: New Car question...
There are a few different ways that can happen. Incentives on certain cars, rebates not advertized, financing... It does sound like you are a great negotiator, though, Good for you Glad I never ran into you as a salesperson
