New... crashing your board... need advice

Hi everyone.

My husband and I got an unexpected surprise last Thursday when I got a BFP. To make a long story short, my last period was July 16. The week after it was due in August, I took 6 pg tests, and all were negative. I figured I just skipped it for whatever reason. When I skipped it again this month, I called my OBGYN for an appt, because I figured there was something really wrong with me. The receptionist booked me an appt for Monday (which was yesterday) but told me to take one more test just in case. I did and it was positive. DH & I were happy, but shocked. We have 2 other children, age 7 & 2.5, and were not expecting this, but like I said, we're happy!!

So, yesterday I went to the OBGYN, having called ahead to tell them I was possibly 8 weeks pregnant. THe sono tech calls me into the office, and does a sonogram. She tells me if def. PG, but only measuring 4.5 weeks Chat Icon I then go into the doctor's office (her office, with the desk, not the exam room). She tells me either I ovulated very late and everything is fine at 4.5 weeks (meaning my dates were just mixed up) or things stopped developing at some point and I'm going to have a miscarriage. She scheduled me for another sono in 2 weeks, but said to call if I have cramping/bleeding. She did not schedule me for bloodwork, tell me about pregnancy related stuff, nothing. No new OB kit, no physical exam, nothing. According to my chart, she saw me yesterday for "irregular menses."

Am I crazy for being confused & scared? Has anyone had a similar experience? I went to the office thinking I was going to be able to tell our families the happy news, and now I don't know what to think.

I'm sorry for crashing your board, and I'm sorry this is so long, but if anyone has any advice they can give me I would be REALLY grateful.

First, congratulations!

Next, I had Irregular Menses listed on my paperwork at my first visit as well. Don't worry!!!

Just wait it out, and see what happens. That is all you can do. At 4.5 weeks, they can only see so much. If you weren't able to calculate the date right, neither will they. Wait another 2 weeks, and you just might see a little baby with a heartbeat.

Good luck, and many prayers for you!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: New... crashing your board... need advice

it sounds very likely that you were late, and only got pregnant 4 weeks ago.
that would explain the BFN's followed by the BFP. (Think back, is it possible that you and your DH did stuff w/o protection at that time?)

I'm not sure why she is having you return in 2 weeks instead of 2.5 weeks... becuase then the embryo would only be 6.5 weeks, which is barely old enough to see a heartbeat... sometimes it takes until about 7 weeks.

I had bleeding at 5.5 weeks, and came in to my OB office. they gave me a sono and I saw a sac. They ALSO didn't do any blood work such as looking at levels doubling.... it was frustrating.

They would never say it to us patients, but I suspect they're thinking 'if it's viable, it will be there on the sono screen in 2-3 weeks... if it's not, it will disappear on its own so checking #'s won't help in either scenario. problem is, this makes nervous mommies like us go over the edge while waiting Chat Icon

Odds are high that your little one is younger than you think.... becuase if it stopped developing a month ago, you likely would have miscarried by now... and you haven't.

keep your chin up and stay optimistic...

and congratulations!!!!
