New here! Opinions needed on laundry room location...

We are builidng a room behind our garage that we can access from the kitchen.

At first I wanted to make it a laundry room but now I'm thinking I want to make it a cute, kitschy mud room.

I figured if I made it a mud room, the laundry room would go downstairs and we'd put in a chute.

What do you think for the first floor? Laundry room or mud room?

will the area be used as an entry and exit way for guests? if so, then you really have to make sure all the laundry is out of sight. i am a somewhat of a slacker with laundry and often have clothes piled up. as a result, i prefer that the room is an an area where guests do not view.

i grew up in a home with a laundry chute. such a cool and convenient feature.

Do you think you might do laundry more often, if you didn't have to go downstairs? Personally, i think i would do a ton more laundry if I didn't have to go down to the basement to do it.

Will there be access to outside if you make it a mudroom. Other then coats and stuff, what else would you use the mudroom for?

I am not a big fan of mudrooms only because its usually for coats and shoes and I just think it looks messy. JMO

How big is the room? Can you make it both? Have the washer and dryer in there and also have some built in shelving, coat rack, etc.

hmmmmm - pros and cons here.

The mudroom would be an entry/exit for family members only - you can only access it through the garage.

Good point about it being messy.

I think I'll make it a mudroom - we have limited closet space on the first floor so that might be better storage-wise.

Thanks for letting me bounce ideas off you!

If it's only accesible from the garage I would make it a laundry room. I love love love having my laundry on my main floor. I would just put a small shoe rack and coat hanger in there too if need be

I agree. You might have the chute to get the laundry downstairs, but you still have to go down there to DO it, and you then still have to carry it back upstairs. I have my laundry room right off my kitchen and I love it. When I have a dirty kitchen towel or something, I just put it right in there. So easy.

We have a "mud room" that you come in off of the garage. We haven't really made too much use of it but my dream has always been to move the laundry in there and do shelving like camacho posted.

I think you should do both, esp. if only fam. members will go through there.

Re: New here! Opinions needed on laundry room location...

Thanks everyone.

It's 5.7 feet deep and 7.3 feet wide. The door (opening the door) makes it lose about 3 feet of the width.

I'm only concerned about the size, a washer and dryer would fit - definitely.

But - I don't know what's more important to me - room to fold, hang, iron OR the location.

They both have pros and cons. Chat Icon

If you do a stackable washer and dryer that will give you more counter and cabinet space.

My laundry "room" right now is a closet and we just take things into the mud room to fold, etc.

I have the stackables and LOVE it!
