New job and TTC
I just started a new job about a month and a half ago. DH wants to start TTC by the end of the year. Do you think my boss would be upset if i got pregnant after only 6 months of employment? I mean its not like i'd stop working as soon as i got preggo or anything, there's still a whole 9 months after that i could work and then take maternity leave kwim.
what do you think? what would you do?

go ahead with your TTC plan. I hate to say this (really, I HATE to say it), but not everyone is lucky enough to conceive as soon as they start TTCing.

Re: New job and TTC
I started my job in January and I am due in December. I really don't care because I feel like I can always find another job........I need to put my family and unborn child FIRST.
They all know and expect me to stay but only time will tell anyways what I am going to end up doing.

I think it is okay. You never know how long it will take to conceive and if you are lucky enough on the first try you do what is best for you and your DH.

I wouldn't give it a second thought. The only thing I might be concerned with time wise is being eligible for FMLA if the company is required to comply.

Re: New job and TTC
That is what I was about to write, I have had two jobs where I got pregnant right away, but luckily I just made their cut off for maternity. They were small companies. Same at this company, you need to be there one year.

I am also stashing away a ton of extra $$$$ in case I do decide to leave and need to pay COBRA until I find a new job. Since I probably won't be there a full year yet when I go out, I don't know what I will be "entitled" to.

Re: New job and TTC
this reminds me of something from a few years ago. a new woman started in my dept and didn't tell anyone, but she was already PG. so she basically went out on maternity leave after 7 months - will FULL benefits.
my company recently changed their policy. you need to be there for 1 full year before you get PG in order to qualify for the 3 months paid leave.

Re: New job and TTC
How long do you intend to take off for maternity leave? Someone in my office started and three months later announced her pregnancy. Now she is due at the end of this month, and just announced she plans on taking off 6 months for maternity leave (we work for the state and they will hold your job for up to 7 months). I hate to say it, but there is a lot of resentment towards her right now in my office, in part because she gave such late notice about her plan to take off 6 months (so they cannot hire a temp in time), and in part because she herself was not even trained entirely before leaving for half a year. If she leaves, she shouldn't expect good recommendations from my office

Re: New job and TTC
well once i give birth i would ideally only take the standard 2 months. ive already asked my coworkers and they said all we get is disability, not full pay. does that sound right? is that what FMLA is? lol, now im all confused.

That's the same with my company. I felt so bad for one co-worker that couldn't afford to stay home for more then 3 weeks after her c-section. She came back part-time before the baby was 4 weeks old.

exactly. Go ahead with your plan but look into your company's policy about time off for maternity leave and how you will get paid.
I wouldn't care one way or the other about my boss being mad at me...have your family.

Re: New job and TTC
As far as I know, FMLA only guarantees they hold your job or an equivalent for a certain amount of time----they do not have to pay you.

FMLA guarantees they hold the job for 6 weeks for regular birth, 8 for c-section. It does depend on the size of the company--small companies are not required to abide by FMLA regulations. No company is required to pay any portion of salary for maternity leave. I work for the state and they do not pay for maternity leave.

That's NYS disability. FMLA will hold your job for three months without pay.

You're right. I can't believe I mixed them up.
But, FMLA is available to those working for employers with 50 or more employees within a 75 mile radius. In addition, an employee must have worked for the company at least 12 months and 1,250 hours in those 12 months. Something to keep in mind.

Re: New job and TTC
This thread inspired me to meet with one of the VP's who oversees the HR stuff today (our HR person is on maternity leave!). I do work for quite a large company. She looked in my file and said I will be eligible for all my vacation time/personal days first (this is almost 5 weeks!) then 60 days of FMLA.
She also said that's unpaid, but I will get disability pay thrown in there (which should be about half my weekly pay check). I also will have full medical coverage unless I decide not to come back then I am eligible for COBRA. I am not expected to give them a date of return until 60 days of FMLA is up, however, it is the respectful thing to notify them ASAP my intentions on returning.
She also said in the event I have to take time off early due to complications or something I will go on disability. Any time beyond the 60 days FMLA for medical reasons, or before my actual maternity leave for medical reasons, I will need to provide a doctor's note.
I feel much more relieved!!!!!

Re: New job and TTC
I only started my job in April and we are going to start TTC REALLY soon. So i will be there less than 6 mo before we start trying and hopefully it does not take long. I don't really care if anyone is mad about me getting PG. This is what we want and my feeling is it's not about other people, it's about you and your family and thats all. I don't think my job would be upset about me getting PG soon after starting though. They seem to be really good about things like that.

Re: New job and TTC
I agree with everyone that said to go ahead with your plans. I started a new job a few months after we got married. I wanted to TTC fairly soon since I am 35.
I waited 4 months so I would be at the company at least a year when the baby was born to get my benefits. We were very blessed and got pregnant right away- I had DS about 14 months after I started the new job.
My manager was not happy at all that I got pregnant- but I do not care. Family always comes first.
