New NYS license plates

ALBANY, N.Y. -- It merges the license plates of the 1970s and 80s with today's.

A new "Empire Gold" license plate that incorporates New York state's gold and blue state colors and part of today's license plate design was unveiled by state Commissioner of Motor Vehicles and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee David J. Swarts. The colors haven't been used since the Liberty plates were issued in the mid-1980s.

They will be issued to most vehicles registered in the state beginning in April, 2010.

"The bold colors of the new license plate reflect New York's force and its resilience," Swarts said. "These new plates, in the official colors of the state of New York, will help maintain highway safety, reduce the number of unregistered and uninsured vehicles on our roads, and generate $129 million in general fund revenue over two years, which will help address the state's financial crisis."


The new plate is gold in color with dark blue letters and numbers in the central part of the plate, separated by the same state silhouette that exists in today's plates. There is a dark blue banner across the length of the top of the plate, with "New York" printed in gold in the center. "Empire State" is in dark blue letters across the bottom.

Periodically re-issuing plates is important for overall safety, law enforcement and the general integrity of the plate, according to state officials as license plate visibility tends to decrease as they lose their reflectivity and become marred and damaged from use. The legibility and reflectivity of the current Empire plate, which was issued beginning in 2001, was only guaranteed for up to 5 years.

DMV will begin issuing the new plates for registration renewals that expire in May 2010. Customers renewing their vehicle registrations in person in a DMV office, over the phone, by mail or through the Internet, will receive their new Empire Gold plates in the mail. Customers completing an original over-the-counter registration transaction will receive their plates immediately.

The replacement, which will add a plate fee of $25 onto the registration price for most vehicles, will take place as part of scheduled vehicle registration and renewal and will take two years to complete. The fee for motorcycle plates will be $12.50.

I like them! I just think it sux the registration fees practically doubled this year and next year we have to pay another $25 for the plates.

I think Paterson could be the biggest idiot to ever hold office.

Good luck securing votes from upstate and LI voters after screwing us with new license fess, registartion fees and now this.

UGLY! And they don't match or go well with my car

And on top of the $25 they want for the new plates, I have to pay additional $20 if I want to keep my same plate number (which is custom!).

OOoh! I like them! Way better than the plates we have now!!! I'm psyched for those! (I always loved Vermont's simplistic plates. )

I completely agree - it resembles the plates for the late 70s and early 80s. And now that I have finally memorized my plate #, I have to pay $40 to keep it!
