I don't think I would call them "idiots" for not leaving. Many of these people are very poor, uneducated and elderly. I don't think it was as easy as you think.

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...

JUST QUIT the discussion, people are dying and suffering and this conversation is USELESS AT THIS POINT.

Lets now deal with the issue of helping these people and restoring the country again!!

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...

It is a horrible horrible situation that is happening here, in the US....we are so removed from the reality of it all, as we sit here and type away, --these people, whether they STAYED or LEFT, now have nothing-it's all gone, nada, not one thing for them to go back to, not even jobs...People feel safer in their homes...Whatever the rich or the poor had, it is gone. Yes, the people should have left...but they didn't so now what? Why did they stay? We don't know...family, sick family, no money, fear, ignorance, ---could you imagine if this happened to us....we would be totally f***ed-----on a normal day the LIE is a mess, could you imagine if we had an evacuation....

The storm came, the storm itself is gone...and life must go on--but for these people their life as they knew it is gone and how do they go on---that is what we should be concerned about--

okay, I am done venting...thank you forl listening.Chat Icon

It definitely helped me understand why the hell these people were not able to leave. I had no idea that it was this BAD there.

I don't think it is useless at all. I think the more people know of the victims, the more likely they will be to donate time/money to the cause.

I must agree - I haven't really given my 2 cents here, since I didn't have a CLEAR opinion on the topic.. but I felt I have learned a lot just reading this thread

If this thread makes us understand these poor people more...makes us understand exactly how and why this is going on...it is in no way useless. We are learning alot and learning a new understanding of these people. If anything, I think its one of the best things we can do right now.

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...

I had no idea of the poverty in the area.
Up until now, I thought of New Orleans and Mardi Gras and Emeril (the chef) were the only things that came to mind.

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...

Things I have seen today and yesterday on the news:
ConEd is sending people down to help get their power back.

NYFD is sending people to help with search and rescue (both active and retired).

Army Corps of engineers has been working on the levee, but had to wait until the water levelled out before anything could be effective.

Re: New Orleans and all the people who stayed...

Let's also remember that even those that were evacuated are in peril. The dome is damaged beyond belief. These people are not reacieving enough water, food and medical attention. Right now New Orleans and its citizens (evacuated or not) are living in what could be compasered to a third world country. People are dying at the dome. They keep promising help and transport, but none is coming. It is just sad and while I undersatnd the desire to understand these peoples motives I truly believe that it is something that is unexplainable.

WOW weren't they supposed to evacuate people from here last night or this morning? What's holding them up?
