New puppy in backyard - To leash or not to leash..

That is our 'hot topic' question in our home. When we bring our puppy home - does she need to walk on the leash in the back yard? Its completely fenced - DH thinks she needs the leash until she gets her rabies vaccine incase some rogue stray cat decides to come into the backyard and scratch her (we wont be leaving her out there- watching her at all times..)

She will be 8 weeks when she comes home... TIA

I would for a bit so your dog knows how to remain under control and to listen to commands in that space.

i actually wouldn't leash her because if a cat does come in and scratch her she won't be able to escape or run away. if you're worried i would just not let her in the yard unsupervised.

She won't be in the backyard alone AT all.. So either she would be leashed and we would walk her around the back yard or she would be unleashed and can run around like a looney and we would be in the grass with her.. KWIM?

I think you should do a mixture of both. we didn't do enough leash work in our yard because we go on so many walks, so Maggie goes crazy running around and playing in the yard offleash... now we're back pedaling to get her to be more uncontrolled and listening to commands in the yard while still having fun.

That's a great time to start training, with collar, on leash. You should always have a collar and tags on them when they're outside, just in case.

We trained with collar and leash so we could get him peeing and pooping in the designated area, and he knew it was business time, not playtime.

I would keep her on the leash. Our yard is fenced in, but we learned that Daisy could dig a hole under and get out. For this reason she is always on a leash when we take her out.

Plus as others have shared, it's a great way to start training her on a leash (for walks) and commands like sit, etc.

Well I would agree with some others and leash her but not because of your husband's reasons. Just so she understands that outside is to potty, what proper behavior is out there meaning not to eat everything she sees, etc. I would give more freedom as she earns it.

awww. congratulations.. what kind of dog? When we brought our german shepherd puppy home at 8 weeks we let her run around free.. that lasted about 2 weeks.. she wouldn't stop eating EVERYTHING out there. Sticks, leaves, mulch.. so for the first few months we leash walked her to try to train her. It worked out good for a while so let her off again and she was good. Some days she gets nippy again but then we just put her back on the leash.. she is now 8 months old and HUGE 75 pounds... DH takes her out with no leash but I am now 25 weeks pregnant so I still take her out on the leash because I can not catch her and fight her..

I would never leave a young puppy like that unattended, for many reasons. So in addition to staying with the dog, it depends what you want to accomplish. If you want the dog to learn to use and walk on a leash, then I would start with a leash back there. If your yard is very large, I would also start with a leash so your dog won't just romp and play.

I agree, puppies need boundaries like kids... You should be out there with them in the beggining

another benefit to leash training in the yard is that you can train your dog to go in one area... my parents did this and the dog only goes in the back left corner of their yard.... next dog i have will 100% be trained to go in one area instead of throughout the entire yard
