I haven't used one yet but can totally understand why some parents do. Some children just don't want you holding their hand and are happier to have a bit of freedom to roam.

I totally agree.
Strollers seem more socially acceptable.

Re: anyone use those "leash" type things for their toddler?
I just bought this. I haven't used it yet, but a friend of mine used the monkey version and she loved it. I hate the idea out of principle, but toddlers are so fast, and sometimes my DD doesn't want to stay in her stroller and/or we're somewhere where strollers aren't practical.

My mom has the monkey version of this for my 2 yr old sister. She bought it for their trip to Disney. My sister does not enjoy sitting in the stroller - she'd rather be part of the action. She actually really liked the "leash". She kept bringing it out of her room and asking me to take her for a walk

Re: anyone use those "leash" type things for their toddler?
I used to think it was horrible to see a child attached to one but now I've learned not to judge and think that maybe, in some cases, it's not such a bad thing. Especially, now-a-days when you hear so many stories about children being abducted.

I used to think that was horrible but I can tell already that my DD will be one of those kids that doesn't want to hold hands or stay in the stroller. I think whatever keeps your kids safe and happy, go for it.

Re: anyone use those "leash" type things for their toddler?
I always said I would never use one, blah blah... But I honestly may have to buy one b/c DD hates her stroller and won't hold my hand so it's hard bringing her places.

Aidy walks around saying, "look - monkey on my back!" She let go of my mom's hand in a department store one time, and that was it - decision was made to get the "leash" for Disney.

I see nothing wrong with them. They are meant to keep your child safe.

yeah, see I totally get that...but they seem so mean. Yanking on your kid to keep them in line and all. Maybe I am just feeding into the stigma.
Plus those cute animals a PP showed are so big on a toddler, I saw them in Disney in the 90 degree heat and it looked soooo hot and cumbersome.

Re: anyone use those "leash" type things for their toddler?
My mom used one for my brother when he was younger. He wanted no part of the stroller and was always on the go. He was so strong minded so this was the only way my mom felt safe taking him out. It worked well and she never had to tug on it or anything. When he walked too far ahead..obviously it tugged on its own. If its to keep your child safe, I see nothing wrong with it.

Re: anyone use those "leash" type things for their toddler?
I have them and used them the first time about 2 weeks ago at the Ecology Site in Holtsville.
I got a lot of mixed reviews from the outspoken bystanders.
Sorry, but when it comes to my little ones safety I don't care what people think. I have 2 that don't like to be confined to the stroller all the time, and one that won't walk around holding my hand, so, it works for us.

I have a feeling that DS is going to be wild one, and I can definitely see myself using a hraness. I don't plan on pulling him, he'll have to learn how far he can and cannot wander.

Re: anyone use those "leash" type things for their toddler?
Both my nephews had harnesses 15 years ago and everyone always gave dirty looks, but I dont care, I am getting one for my DD, id rather be safe than sorry. Now at least they are cuter, my nephews had the old fashion ones, they really looked like leashes.

Re: anyone use those "leash" type things for their toddler?
My DD is strong willed, stubborn and independent as well. But we REFUSE to put a "leash" on her. Things can happen nowadays, but nothing beats a parent watching their child 150% of the time and teaching your child right and wrong, even if it means cutting my mall trip, shopping trip, exursion short cause my toddler isn't listening nor behaving.
Toddlers test your limits every single minute of the day to see what they can get away with, as a parent it's my job to teach her what's acceptable and what's not at any age.
But that's just me and my big ol opinion on kid's restraints...
To each is own.

Re: anyone use those "leash" type things for their toddler?
I don't think using these things makes anyone any less of a parent then someone who doesn't use them.
I teach my babies every day - they are very smart, strong willed, high spirited babies.
I do watch my babies 100% of the time while we are out and about. I do cut my excursions short if someone is throwing a temper tantrum. However, they don't always like to be restricted to the stroller, so I like to give them a feeling of a little freedom while teaching them that they have to be by me at all times, either holding my hand or with the "leash".
I see nothing wrong with it.

Have to agree with you on that one, no offense to the other ladies. As you all well know, I have one of the most challenging and spirited toddler on these boards. But, that's all the more reason why I've made it my life mission to teach her exactly what her boundaries are, without resorting to a leash. I can't even begin to tell you the number of times I've had to give her public time-outs, strapped her into her stroller while she's screaming at the top of her lungs, or just remove her from the situation entirely, but for me, it's worth it in the end for her to learn to respect what I tell her, while maintaining a certain degree of independence to explore.

No, I agree, just because I wouldn't use one doesn't mean I think anyone is less of a parent for doing so. And trust me, if I had more than one child, all whilst having to take care of miss diva-alexandra, I may change my tune a bit
