New Puppy Nipping/ Mouthing your kids?
What was the most effective method to get your puppy to stop mouthing/nipping your toddlers? I know we have to be consistent so I want a real good one cause I have a 3 year old, 2 year old and infant.

There kinda like little kids. Tell them no and redirect them to there own chew toys.

Re: New Puppy Nipping/ Mouthing your kids?
first what type of dog do you have
and have you given them chew toys- nyla makes some good puppy bones that are chicken flaoved - they ned healthy things to chew on
also spray your arms and legs -with bitter spray a couple times a day - it is hard with kids putting hands in mouths
also i would start puppy kindergraten right away
i have a golden puppy - now almost 18 months and he is still a little mouthy when he wants something (we just moved back inot a house so he is confused a little bit) - so make sure he is properly fed and does not need to go out -

Re: New Puppy Nipping/ Mouthing your kids?
I didn't have kids when ours were puppies but we had 2 airedale terriers (terrorists ) who were UBER mouthy! Our dog trainer said the best best thing you can do is to DRAMATICALLY "yelp!" when they nip you. Instead of sayig "ouch. no no no no no". just make a loud and dramatic "YOWEEEE" sound, then put your arms STRAIGHT at your sides and turn your back. It's SO SO effective - you are removing the reward (which is YOU!). Yes you'll feel ridiculous, yes you'll have to do it 1 million times, and YES you need everyone in the house to cooperate but it's a GREAT training tool. If puppy keeps nipping, after a reasonable amount of "yows" and turning around, he goes in the crate, end of story. It gets better each day, teach the kids it's a new game to train puppy and they'll cooperate!11

Re: New Puppy Nipping/ Mouthing your kids?
oh yeah also - i was told to cross arms away from them - they don't get attention till they pet - turn your back on them when they are doing bad behavior
i defently recomend taking a class - i just got my first dog last year- i grew up with dogs but taking a class taught me a lot of little things i did not know as this was my first time as the primary care giver to the dog

Re: New Puppy Nipping/ Mouthing your kids?
Bitter apple right in the mouth immediately... we had a HUGE problem when we first got our dog (aka Puppy from Hell, but that's another story) and he was actually breaking skin on the kids. It was a nightmare. We got through it with the bitter apple/lots of long walks to break down the excitement/crating him/finding a good obedience class. He's over 1 now and still has his days, but he is great with the kids now.

Our dog wasn't a puppy when we got him, and even though we got him before we had the DCs -- this method worked GREAT.....
