New sex offender law in Town of Brookhaven

Full article: Newsday

"Brookhaven Town enacted a landmark measure Tuesday that makes it illegal for more than two registered sex offenders to live in the same single-family home.

The ordinance, which town officials and child protection advocates have said is the first of its kind in the state, is designed to break up clusters of sex offenders, such as the one in the Homestead Drive area of Gordon Heights. According to a state registry Web site, more than 40 registered sex criminals live in that roughly half-square-mile area. Chat IconChat IconChat Icon

The town board unanimously approved the measure Tuesday night after a public hearing. One resident, Timothy Timms of Coram, which adjoins Gordon Heights, asked the board to pass it because he fears "my children aren't safe on the street."

Other residents questioned whether the law is strict enough and whether it will hold up in court."

It's a step in the right direction. I wish the Town of Babylon would do the same thing. There's a bunch living in a motel on Sunrise Highway. And isn't there supposed to be a law that they can't be too close to a school? There's one right down the block from my god-daughter's school in West Babylon.

yeah...but the problem is now they all go into emergency housing, and we end up paying thousands to house them in trailers, and we pay to cab them back and forth to the local social service centers. I like when they're all together-you know where they are.
