new to board, confused and upset please help
Hello ladies... im new to this board... and a bit emotional .. not sure where to start or how to feel.. but here is my story..
DH and i were married in march of 2007, i have been off the pill for about 2 years we went for a full fertility work up throu my obgyn.. and here are my results..
Progesterone 6.0 ng/ml Luteinizing Hormone 4.7 IU/L Follicle Stimulating Hormone 1.5 IU/L Prolacting 37.1 ng/ml Normal range should be 4.8 to 23.3
DH got his analysis as well and he is all fine.. so when i went to ob last night for results they told me my prolactin level was high and right off the bat he said to me i want you to go see East coast fertility so we can possibly start the Invetro process... I totally flipped and was like wait is there not any other options... i mean my girl friend had high prolactin levels and she went to an endocronologist and he gave her bromocreptine and she was preggo with in a month of taking them.. my ob was like well yea but the fastest way is to go to east coast and possibly start the invetro..
Im not ready for that yet... i want to try other options first... so now im confused not sure what to do .. should i go to east coast, should i go to endo doctor, should i go to another obgyn for 2nd opinion..
.................UPDATE ive decided to go see a regular endo first and take it from there...
Thank you all for all your words and advise it sure helps to know that i can come on this site .. and talk about things that i may not be sure of .. so thank you all from the bottom of my acky heart..

First, I would go to another OB/GYN for a second opinion. You could go to East Coast for a consult, but you might want to go to another RE for a second opinion also.
I would try those options before the endocrinologist only because a good RE will let you know if the endocrinologist can help you.

I would definitely get a 2nd opinion. I don't know where you live but I love my RE, he's in Setauket - Dr. Michael Lydic.

I would see an RE as well. Might as well get the ball rolling if you have a known issue. They will be able to tell you if you should see an endocronologist or if this is something the RE could handle.

Re: new to board, confused and upset please help
Me two cents on this....
when I had my fertility testing done everything came out great except my prolactin...
it was around yours 39 I think....the RE (I am at Cornell) simply send me for another test (he said stress plays a huge role in raising the results, also certain medications do the same)....my second test came back at 19 which is perfectly normal....
The doctor will not tell you to do IVF simply because of the prolactin..there are medications you can take to lower it......
Increased prolactin levels can interfere with ovulation. They may also indicate further testing (MRI) should be done to check for a pituitary tumor. Some women with PCOS also have hyperprolactinemia.
Also, your LH is higher than your FSH by quite a bit. An LH that is higher than FSH is one indication of PCOS.
I am not a doctor but the FSH seems too low for your age (assuming you are in your 20s??)...1.5 is way too low (normal range at Cornell is above 3))...when did you have your testing done? which cycle day? it makes a difference....
My point is to get retested and then seek a different doctor...
GL and don't worry too much!!

Wow, if that was the extent of the conversation and all he pointed out, I would seek another opinion.
I would NOT go to IVF as a first resort at all.
I would seek another OB opinion before seeing an RE if it were me.

I agree. IVF IMO should be a last resort. Definitely seek another OB opinion and have some more bloodwork. If he is telling you to jump to IVF based on one blood test that is very premature. Good Luck!

I agree...you are doing a good thing by getting another opinion. See an RE, one you feel comfortable with, and let him/her investigate...it's their specialty!
