Newbie has another question and needs your advice/opinion - LONG
I feel like every time I post I should thank you all in advance for being so great .......so, I will - THANK YOU !!
My first question is, why do they have you back a week or so after you surge to check your progesterone? - What are they looking for? I suposedly O'd sometime between thrus-sat, and I am going back this coming sat. for blood -
Second, unfortunately, DH and I are paying completely out of pocket for this right now b/c my Ins doesn't cover any type of IF treatment once I've been 'diagnosed'- We didn't realize a few days of bloodwork and some sonos would cost almost $3,000 !!! - I can't keep that up !! -
So, here is where I ask for your advice. I have PCOS, this is our first cycle and I'm taking metformin AND clomid (100) I responded well. So, if this cycle doesn't work, do you think it's worth it for me to continue w/ the Metformin and my weight loss and hope that I can get back to Oing on my own?? (I had been regular for my entire life........went on the pill about 6 years ago, and unfortunately, after college gained almost 25 lbs!!) When I stopped my pills all of a sudden I had this crazy long cycle, if any at all -
DH's insurance covers ALL, so if we're not pregnant by November, we'll switch to his Ins and start again in January ........I hate to wait another 6 months, but do you think it's that big of a deal ..........WHO can afford $3k a month JUST to have sex ??? I'll be 30 in December, so I'm not 'old', but i'm not 'young' either .........I don't know, What do you all think ???

I would definitely just stick with the Met and see what happens. Many, many women begin to ovulate on their own just from the Met.
In November, switch and be more aggressive...in the big picture it's only a matter of a few months.

Why don't you switch to his insurance now? or you have to wait for open enrollment?

Right now we're both under mine b/c it's cheaper (now we know why!!) So we have to wait for open enrollment to dump mine and pick up his .........

I agree. In the longterm, 6 months really doesn't make THAT much of a difference, why waste $3k a month until then?

Also, PCOS is highly affected by diet so you may want to start cutting carbs now and you will be in great shape for treatment in the fall.

ITA. I saw a nutrionist for a while who specialized in PCOS, she said that even if you lose 10% of your body weight that could help you to start O'ing on your own again. Stick with the Met, because that will help as well.
ETA: They have you come back a week later to check your progesterone because progesterone is a very important part of early pregnancy. Progesterone is what helps to sustain a pregnancy until the placenta takes over. So they are checking to make sure your progesterone levels are good.

Re: Newbie has another question and needs your advice/opinion - LONG
Can I skip the progesterone test and just wait to take a pregnancy test or get my period to know what happend this cycle? ........Or will I need to know those figures for some other reason in the 'big picture' (ie: is there anything else 'wrong' with me)
I'm normally not looking to skimp on anything health care related - But I'm paying for this out of pocket, and one little blood test can cost $200 !! -
If it's just going tell me EARLIER if I'm pregnant or not, I think I can wait another week ...........

It won't tell you earlier if you are pregnant or not, but it's wise to go to your progesterone check. If your progesterone is low, they can put you on suppositories. Progesterone is very important in sustaining a pregnancy during the early weeks.

Absolutely do not skip this test. It lets the Dr. know if your body produces enough progesterone after ovulation to maintain a pregnancy. It will NOT tell you wether or not you are PG, only if your body produces enough progesterone. If not, they will give you progesterone supplementation to raise your levels and if you do get PG, it will help to prevent miscarriage.

Have you called your insurance company about this? I'm just surprised that bloodwork isn't covered. I have no IVF coverage at all but do get my blood/sonos and dr. visits covered.
Maybe there is a coding issue because blood work is usually considered diagnostic.
Good luck!
p.s. dont skip the progesterone test
