Newborn and Poop - Need Help
My DS is 1 month old and is having terrible gas pains and a very hard time going to the bathroom. The last time he went on his own was Saturday morning. On Monday night, the pediatrician had me try the thermometer and when that didn't work I had to go to the suppository. He went about an hour and a half later (a lot). That was Monday night and hasn't gone since. It will be three days again tonight. I have to call the pediatrician today. I really don't want to give him the suppository again. He is in soo much pain, screaming and stiffening and kicking his legs. It happens about 3-4 times a day and at least once at night. I don't know what to do. I've tried bicycling his legs, putting him on his left side, the Mylicaon drops and we are giving him 2 oz of water a day. Sorry this is so long. Any advice??
By the way, I am strictly breastfeeding by a bottle.

Re: Newborn and Poop - Need Help
Maybe it's something you have been eating? Dairy, gassy foods & veggies could be a trigger. Maybe a different bottle would help? What kind are you using? I have heard Dr. Browns helps with gas since they don't take in much air. I use advent when she gets a bottle.
I would def try burping him after every 1/2 to 1 ounce of milk.
Is his poo hard and formed?
I am soo sorry, I hope it gets better for you and the little one

Re: Newborn and Poop - Need Help
Oh boy, I'm sorry. This is exactly what we're going through with Katie. I feel for you and for the baby.
It could most definately be your diet that is giving him this problem. Have you talked to your ped about cutting foods out that would make him gassy? (Like green veggies)
The bottle could be giving him gas too - gulping air in when he's feeding.
I read somewhere that if moving the baby's legs doesnt seem to help, stop, because you could make it worse - but I dont know how accurate that it.
Dont feel bad giving him another suppository, he needs to poop plus you've only given him one other one. I had to give Katie 3 of them within a week and a half for the same reasons you are having. The ped said it was OK.

Re: Newborn and Poop - Need Help
Thanks. I have been watching my diet and sticking with very bland foods and very little dairy and no veggies. We were using avent bottles but bought the Dr. Browns last night. I plan on using the tonight. The last time he went it was not hard so the doc said he is not constipated. Moving the legs seems to let gas out but still no poop.
MrsJ, after the suppositories, did Katie begin pooping on her own again?
I feel so bad for him. I will be calling the ped this afternoon.
We gave him the suppository at 6:00 and nothing so far!

3 1/2 hours after the suppository and nothing. Any suggestions? I'm really getting nervous.

I would still wait. The bottle says they should go within 15 minutes to an hour after administering the suppository, but my son always took longer. I ended up having to give my son 2 oz of pear juice each day. He still gets it (at almost 6 months)
Edited to add: It usually took my son 5-6 hours.

I'm sorry I just saw this question. She only started pooping again on her own when we switched back to the other formula she was on. But also, when we gave her a suppository, it worked within a few minutes. I think 3 hrs is a very long time.
I hope your baby is feeling better, the poor little thing.

Re: Newborn and Poop - Need Help
Danielle is 4 months, and about a month ago, she started only pooping every 2-3 days. The first time she did it I used the thermometer to get her to go, now it just seems to be her pattern. I am not worried about it bc she's not uncomfortable though - if she was I'd be worried too. It seems like there are two things going on though, gas and constipation...I hope it gets better soon!

Re: Newborn and Poop - Need Help
Well, he finally went after about 4 hours. But he was up all through the night with terrible pains again. I was hoping that the suppository would releive his gas pains, but it didn't. He definitely is not constipated based on the consistency. I am going to call the doc again to see if the suppository was supposed to help the gas pains. I am feeling like a terrible mother right now since I can't do anything for him!
