Re: newborn pics...

I had a really hard time explaining to my DH why we spent $$ on her newborn pics. Looking at the pics now, they are worth every penny, and DH feels the same way. I can't even remember her being that little, but the pics bring me right back to that time. I knew I couldn't capture her in the same way a professional photographer would

Re: newborn pics...

I actualy don't find them expensive at all. My bpics cost more and these pics are so much more important and worth it

You should check out forever fireflies - she was cheapest by far and imo her work is just as good as the others. Keep in mind I am only getting a disc with all the pics

Re: newborn pics...

we went with my mother's friend who is a photographer -- the pictures she took werent the "usual" newborn pics that are so popular now, but i think she did a great job!

DS was in the NICU for a week after i came home -- so doing the photoshoot within 10 days from coming home was impossible

we got these taken when DS was exactly a month old:

she also did my maternity pics which i LOVE also!

All I can say is you get what you pay for and while of course you will love any picture of your baby an amateur photo is not going to have the editing, composition, props or quality of that done by a professional. It's really that simple.
I am not a professional, not a photographer of any kind really but I am very critical of photographs and I can say that while I do think it's $$$$$ the quality of people like Summer, AvaJack, Michelle McFadden far exceeds that of other less expensive photographers. I learned the hard way and bid on a photographer at my DD's school rather than the woman we usually use. What a nightmare!!! Her editing was horrendous. Her composition sucked. And the list goes on. Never again!!
Honestly if I lived in NY I don't know if I could afford them either but I would really never compare them to what someone who picks up an SLR and calls themselves a photographer can do.

Re: newborn pics...

I might be doing them professionally, only because I had a certificate for a free day after shoot that expires in March with a predominately newborn photographer, and if she is willing to extend the expiration on it and switch it to newborn, i'll do it.

If not, I have the luxury of having a semi-pro photographer for a husband, so we'll do our own shots, and I'm sure they'll come out just as great, because we'll have a kickass little model.

We will be a one-income family once the baby comes. I cannot imagine spending anywhere near what I spent on my wedding photography for a newborn shoot.

I'm happy with my choice - I don't understand why there's a backlash against people who don't want to empty their savings for newborn photography.

If the pictures will be better than what DH and I can do on our own, then I'm happy.

I fully agree!

Re: newborn pics...

I didn't do them with my twins, and you know what, I don't really regret it. I took lots of pictures of them when they were born and I love all the pictures. I didn't even try to recreate a professional shoot.
That being said, I am planning on doing them with this baby. The reason I decided this time around is because I know my time will be limited and I have no idea how many times I will actually pick up my camera, if ever. I feel like this baby is already getting shafted - last time I was pregnant I did belly shots and all that, and this time - none - and I'm already 31 weeks.
I also want to get some good family shots, and pics with J&M with their new sister, which I honestly don't think I'll be able to do with me behind the camera.
So this time, I think they are worth the money. But last time I didn't. And I'm ok with both those decisions!

No drama at all...just different opinions Chat Icon (they are like arseholes- everyone has one Chat Icon )

I don't think there is anything wrong with using your own snapshots for announcements, having a friend do them, using a newbie photographer, or heck, even going to JC Penneys. You are absolutely right- people are going to go with what they like and what they can afford. As much as I know they are worth it and why they charge what they do, I know I could't afford a lot of the higher priced photographers either.

think about it this way....how much money did you spend on your wedding photog? most of us spent thousands on weddings pics to capture 1 monumental day, this is the same thing in my opinion.

So true Chat Icon And, along the same line of thought, you spend what you can afford, and get the talent that goes with that price!

Absolutely. Some things are more important to people than others. No one should feel bad for the decisions they make.

Re: newborn pics...

i will be doing them but im not sure with who yet. for me personally, i am very much not into the super posed super propped pictures. i like a hat here or there or a simple prop, but i prefer the pics to focus on the LO, with special focus on those aspects that will change very quickly - like close ups of the hands and feet next to like DHs hands, and the skin, and the tiny features. i know the super posed super propped pics are super trendy now, and i hope that works to my advantage so that the type of photographer that im looking for is cheaper.

i am a fairly decent photographer with a pretty good camera, but i know from experience of shooting newborns that unless you have the right lighting and equipment its extremely hard to match the look and coloration of photos from a true professional, and that quality is ultimately why i am choosing to do them. i am very into using photography as art so ii also plan to have larger canvas prints and that type of art made out of them, so even if i only end up with a handful of perfect pictures, i know i will get good use out of them so it will be worth the money to me personally.
