Re: Newport Rhode Island
Where are you staying? I was there for my cousin's wedding last fall. There is a cute chain of restaurants called Newport Creamery that are definitely kid-friendly. It's kind of like Friendly's, but with an old timey feel.
We had a great dinner at the Brick Alley Pub, which may not be as kid-friendly as you are looking for. Have some clam chowder at the Black Pearl, located on the wharf.
All in all I didn't think there was too much to do other than window shop (it's kind of like a larger Port Jeff), and do the mansions/cliff walk. I think the mansion tours would be boring for a toddler. There are some beaches that we didn't get to that could be fun.

Re: Newport Rhode Island
My favorite steakhouse is there, 21 Bowens. The Brick Alley Pub and the Black Pearl were both places we ate lunch and were very good.
There's an amazing gelato place if you walk all the way up the main strip of stores.
There are lots of stores. The mansions are fun to go through. We walked the paved part of the Cliff Walk, a significant portion is not paved and we were afraid of slipping on the rocks.

Re: Newport Rhode Island
You will be close to some of the beaches..of if you want to drive, there is the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Cranston...
You also won't be that far from Fall River, Massachusetts---it has Battleship Cove, which is nice..there also may be some feasts & festivals going on around the area..lots of italians & portuguese around here..
have a blast!
There is also the Newport DInner Train, that may be fun for the whole family to do also...

Re: Newport Rhode Island
the cliff walk is really nice. if you start at the end near memorial drive the 1st portion of it is a pathway that you can take a stroller on. you can see the water and views of the houses as well.
we had a really nice dinner at the clarke cooke house.
the red parrot had a large menu and was more casual. it has fun drinks too.

We are staing at the Best Western...
Originally we were staying in the Marriott, where the wedding is-but the rooms were $$$$ with a 3 night minimum.
If it was DH and I- I would try and stay at The Chanler at Cliff Walk (a friend of mine stayed there when they got engaged- I heard GREAT THINGS) but for a family trip- that will only be used for rest, the best western is just fine

Re: Newport Rhode Island
We're back... just figured Id add a few things here for those who may be looking for info in the future...
We took a tour of the belcourt castle... which was pretty cool but very "history lesson-ish" I just wanted to look around and see cool stuff- I didnt want an hour history lesson...I wouldve LOVED to do the ghost tour- but I had DS with me- so that was out!
Some of DH family who was there did the Breakers Mansion- they said it was pretty cool as well..
We ate at Brick Alley for lunch- someone had posted it wasnt kid friendly- but I found it to have an "apple bees" feel... Not sure what its like @ night- but it was def. "family friendly" for lunch. Food was YUMMY.
We also ate at Atlantic Grille for breakfast which is in Middletown (about 7min away) which is more for the "locals" its not like in any tourist info, and the food was AMAZING.
We hit Beavertrail Light house which was really nice- such a beautiful area. So peaceful.
We did alot of walking around and window shopping. We had beautiful weather so it was just nice being in the fresh air.
We stayed in the Best Western which was OK- honestly the motel 6 was cheaper and looked a bit nicer.
We went to the Marriott for a wedding- which was beautiful.
Across the street from our hotel was Grand casino- which was def. something we had fun with at night.... No tables, just slots.

Glad you had fun! We also stayed at the Best Western, and I agree, I would not stay there again. Very run-down for the money.
