Newport RI?
yay or nay?
a grp of us (4-6) were offered the chance to stay at a firends house for the weekend in july...will this be fun? are there things to do?? any recommendations? thanks!

There is the Cliff walk and the mansions. Great beach and fun night life - rest. and bars!

awesome thanks, we were going to do hamptons but got mixed reviews and figured the RI thing might suit us better

I loved Newport! So beautiful!! But I adore looking at old fancy mansions like that. I think it'll probaby be crowded, but I would definately go. I'm sure since it's a holiday weekend, they will have lots of goings-on too.

Definitely a YAY. RI is great and the mansions are wonderful, if you like that sort of thing. If not, its a lovely area anyways, I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

YEARS ago, I quit my job at Viacom in NYC, packed my bags and moved to Newport--got an apartment in a huge house on the water, my apt was once the maids quarters (2 floors) and waitressed in town, walked to work and LOVED it...Made great money in the winter months!!! (yeah, winter). Getting to be a local was interesting and I'll never forget the experience. I could share stories from that adventure!!
You gotta go!!! I always enjoyed taking the ferry from Orient to New London and driving up.

The Cliff walk is great. We loved the Vanderbilt mansion.
Newport has a lot of great shops and seafood restaurants.

Newport is lovely. Also Naraganset - we have a wedding there in July and are making a long weekend of it. Beautiful beaches!

It's just a little over and an hour from New London. So if you take the ferry, it's 2 1/2 hours.
