How do you kno when to switch to the next size nipple?

I switched when she was around 5-6 months old. She was sucking like crazy on the bottle and it seemed like she was trying really hard to get more out.

I switched at 3 mths, he was getting annoyed with the bottles.
We use Dr. Browns and the package for the nipples tell you to change at 3 mths then at 6 mths.
