Nicknames...when do you start using them

so nicknames are pretty common...but when do you start callng someone by a nick or shortened name?

is there a certain amount of familiarity expected?

when you are addressed with a nickname by someone else, does it ever take you aback or feel "too soon"

what is your nickname etiquette?

you TOTALLY have to know me for a MINIMUM of two weeks, before you can call me "b1tch"

I don't use nick names all that often mostly with DH. but he actually started with one nickname within months of dating and still calls me it!

I guess when ever that line of comfort is established and the awkwardness is gone

Depends on the person.. some people you instantly bond with others it takes awhile.. so for me it all depends on nickname and who its coming from.

At work we have nicknames for everyone!

I don't have a time frame for the nicknames I give people I know.
I have a nickname for everyone pretty soon after knowing them.

The nicknames at work for me are

Philips
Fix
Felixdelphia
Philli Dilli

I think it depends on how well and how soon you connect with said person takes.

I don't think there's a set amount of time to get to that comfort level, I think if varies from person to person and relationship to relationship.

I admit it does strike me as weird sometimes when I hear people that I don't know that well shorten my name or call me a nickname....even when I see my real name written on here by people I don't "know" I'm like whoa...but then I R.E.L.A.X. realize it's no big.

in my family growing up I was either called my full name or just the first letter of my first name, not the usual "Jess" that most people use, so that one I am just getting used to.

calling me names sometimes happens right after meeting me...so you're a b1tch is not as intimate or personal as calling me "J"

Well, my name is Jennifer...but hardly anyone calls me that, I am always "Jen"...but it will annoy me if let's say I interview someone and they call me to follow up and they say "Hi, Jen"...I just think that's rude - you don't know me! But everyone else, I prefer Jen.

I am SO BAD. I noticed I do this to people right away and I stopped. I tend to shorten names- Alexandra becomes Alex, etc...

I hate people who meet me and immediately start calling me Nance. First, I HATE NANCE. HATE IT.

Second, ususally people who call me this are fakies. I imagine them saying Nancy and doing that wink, making guns with there hands--Jack Tripper Style.

lol, my name is Kristen and when I started my new job my boss right away started calling me Kris. It is very strange to me and I do not like it. But it is funny bc my family and best friends only call me Kris or Krissy (I am the youngest of four, my older siblings still call me that, lol). And it's natural to hear them say it. Just the other day my best friend introduced me to her boyfriends sister as Kristen but after that she called me Kris and the sister started calling me that and it was werid!

eta: but my husband REFUSES to call me Kris or anything other than Kristen. lol

My name is Melissa---and for some reason once in awhile, I get someone trying to call me "Missy" -- and I despise that nickname with a passion...I let them know its not cool no matter HOW long they've known me.

The only person to use a nickname for me regularly was my college roommate--she would call me "Lyssa" -- she was quite southern. But she waited until we were pretty friendly to do that--like a month or so. The first 2 wks we just co-habitated - then we started to become friends.

My name is Lisa. Doesn't get much shorter than that. I HATE when people I don't know call me "Lis" (Leese). Is it so hard to say the A. Unless you really know me, then it's okay.

I always wait a bit after meeting someone. Or I will ask if they mind that I call them a shortened version of their name.

For some reason people will shorten my name right off the bat. I'll say "hi, I'm Stephanie" and they're like "hi Steph." Or like the second time they meet me, they call me Stephie. That to me is weird. Even my boss calls me Stephie. I guess I just have that Stephie "look," I don't know.

ETS: I really don't mind people shortening my name, I actually perfer it. i just find it strange that noone asks me if I mind it.

My name is Claudette. When I introduce myself, I introduce myself as Claudette. It drives me crazy when people start to call me Claud. That is NOT my name. If I wanted to be called that, I would introduce myself that way...make sense? I pretty much go by the person and how they introduce themselves to me. As well as the social setting.

I try not to be a nicknamer. I make an attempt to call them the name that they introduced themselves as.

I do nickname people in my head so I remember them..."The Gut Spiller", "the PITA who doesn't drive fast enough", etc.

My name is Jaclyn, but I tend to introduce myself as Jackie, except during interviews, and when talking to parents at school. Most friends call me Jackie, but only a few close friends call me "Jax" or "Jaxie". It's my screenname, so people use it on here all the time, but IRL, I get very thrown off when someone starts using one of those names for me.

I am the annoying person that refuses to use nicknames I hate any and all variations of my name (ironic since it is my username) so I always use everyone's FULL name.

Josh is Joshua
Chris is Christopher

At my old job I worked with a lot of younger guys and they always said I reminded them of their mom because of that, LOL

If I am close to the person I will make their name Italian and call them by that!

I am the only person who calls my DH Anthony really. He is AJ or Ant to his family and Tony to his friends

usually only my sister and a few friends refer to me by shortening my name to "Hel"....but a few weeks back my boss who I NEVER see (he's in another building)....said "hey Hel" and that really threw me off, but I wasn't annoyed b/c I took it as him being informal and friendly. if it was someone I barely knew maybe I'd get more annoyed.....but honestly spelling my name incorrectly is wayyyyyy more of a pet peeve than shortening it (how anyone can spell it as "Hellen" is baffling to me!).

I try to call people what they introduce themselves as ......... but I tend to shorten names.

I'll ASK Jennifer if I can call her Jen .....but I NEVER EVER use someone's formal name if they do not like it -
If you say "Hi, I'm Mike" I do not become your Mother and call you Michael ..........that annoys the hell out of me !

People always shorten my name - which is funny b/c my parents picked it b/c they didn't think I'd have a nickname .....I don't really care that much -

Marisa .........Maris, Ris - My sister is Alexis and people try to call her Alex, she flips out - She'll let you get away w/ Lex or Lexi if she likes you .....
