Night waking 9 month old - tooth or separation? BTDT Mom's help!
My DD has been STTN for the most part for a good while now. I think she is getting her top tooth. For BTDT Mom's how much do you think getting a new tooth affects sleeping?
I am not sure if it is the tooth or separation anxiety issues b/c the minute we bring her closer to the crib she starts hysterically crying. I thought maybe that could be it since I was just off for 11 days straight and we went away to Florida for a week, etc. so she may be missing us at night now since we spent so much time with her.
I just don't know whether to do CIO if she is in pain, or if she just wants to spend time with us during the middle of the night?

it's time for separation anxiety-9 to 11 months is peak time. Both my girls went through it.
Just try your best not to start any habits you don't want to keep in the long run. Good Luck!

I've read that babies don't wake up from teething. Do i believe it? I don't know.
I will say that separation anxiety started for jacen at night around 8 1/2 months.
It sounds like to me, that its separation anxiety.

Ok, so do I do CIO then?? We did it a bit last night, after we changed her, turned on the aquarium, etc. we def. catered to her needs, then she cried herself to sleep after about 30 min. The thing is I feel the tooth coming in so I don't know if that is it.
We did give her tylenol too.

For Jacen, motrin is better than tylenol (lasts longer too). Maybe try that instead before bedtime.
But yes i would let her CIO. We had to do it with jacen because it was becoming too much. As soon as you picked him up, he was fine. But when you went to put him down, he'd cry. It became an hour long process. Trust me... you don't want to get to that point.

Re: Night waking 9 month old - tooth or separation? BTDT Mom's help!
DS never had too much discomfort from teething.
The way I could always tell if it was discomfort or separation when DS wakes...
If he stops crying the second I pick him up, its habit/separation. If he continues cr;ying or wimpering its usually something more that is bothering him.
I agree with aliwnec10, we waited awhile to do CIO because DS was always such a good sleeper we figured he would straighten it out on his own. But he didnt and went from STTN to waking 1x then 2x then 3x it was horrible! He didnt do that when he was a NB! So we did CIO and with in 3 days he was back to STTN. I will say though the first night was horrible he crieed for an hour and 15 minutes STRAIGHT!
GL!

Re: Night waking 9 month old - tooth or separation? BTDT Mom's help!
DD is doing the same thing.
I can usually tell the difference between the teething and the SA because if I take her out (to check her temp or something) and she immediately stops crying, then I know she isn't in pain and she goes right back in the crib to CIO
Also - if she is fine the entire day , then all of a sudden starts screaming when she goes down then I know its most likely SA.
Sometimes you can see the panic in her eyes when we start walking towards the crib.

Re: Night waking 9 month old - tooth or separation? BTDT Mom's help!
DD did the same thing and last night was the first night that she was back to sleeping through the night.
I have the FP aquarium soother. If she was inconsolable, I would pick her up hold her until she calmed down, then put on her soother and let her watch that for a bit and then I put her in her crib. Of course she cried. I would calm her down in her crib and then let her CIO. I did this for a few nights until she stopped crying when I put her down.
Thankgoodness for the remote because after that if she woke up crying, I would click that remote from my bedside and she would calm down.
Hang in there.
