Saves your lense in case you drop it.

Hoya UV filter

For me it was only about protecting the lens.

It protects the lens from scratches, etc. In my case, it saved my lens twice when once I dropped my camera & once the camera bag fell off the chair it was hanging from. I've shattered 2 filters but was lucky that the lens was completely fine.

I dropped my BIL's camera and he had a $400 lense on. Chat Icon I only broke the protective cover and he got a new one for about $15. We just got a Nikon D60 and the salesman did not have to talk us into the filter after my experience. We got a UV filter.
