we have the Nikon D50
digital SLR's have really come down in price. they're only a few hundred (if that) more than point and shoot cameras.
if you love taking pics and want to learn more about photography, I highly recommend getting one.
I have heard nothing but good things about the D40's
and if you have any issues, Nikon is close by, right in Melville. they provide excellent service.

I just got the D40 yesterday, not the D40x. I have to say that it's the most easiest thing to use and I feel like a pro.
