NIMBY- George Carlin said it best
why, when something happens in a neiborhood, or someone commits a crime, do people always wonder "how" it happened in their town, or if the perps are from their area...as if it couldn't happen there?
It boggles my mind, it really does. Why couldn't it be from your hood? why do people think their surrounding are immune?
I mean, I grew up in what is now a fancy schmancy neighborhood, but it's always had it's share of crime, so I have never wondered these things...I just know that crime happens, bad seeds grow everywhere...
People sound so naive on the news when I hear that ish..."I just can't believe it happened here"
anyway, that's it.

It's annoys the living crap out of me as well. Sometimes I try to chalk it up to nothing more than denial, but honestly I think it's just ignorance and the backwards thinking that crime only happens in certain areas. I see and hear it every day in the work that I do. If I had $1 for every person that is "shocked" to learn that domestic violence happens everywhere, and yes...even in "good areas".

I think that many times people just do not want to beleive that it could happen in their neighborhood. People want to feel safe. No one wants to think that they are living next door to serial killer or child molestor and it's worse when it is actually true!

Re: NIMBY- George Carlin said it best
I don't think I live in a bubble but, if a driveby shooting happened in my town, I'd be the first one that would be shocked by it. I'd also be surprised if I found out my neighbor was drug dealer because they are seemingly normal. The drug dealers I know are not.
I agree that there are azzholes everywhere - but there are higher crime rates in poorer neighborhoods - which is where the NIMBY factor comes in.

I think you only hear about the crimes in "poorer" neighborhoods because they are an easier target and it seems to be expected more. Where as the fancy ones..you hardly hear about them, and when you do it's almost shocking. Meanwhile it could be happening all along. MHO is I think they can happen anywhere and to anyone..and that is unfortunately the way of the world today. Some people just don't want to believe it.

What crimes are you talking about? Do you think the paper is burying the whorehouse in Cold Spring Harbor story?
