Nipple size opinion needed.

My DD is 10 weeks old and she is using a Level 1 nipple. Ever since day one she has sucked hard on the nipple where you can hear her sucking. It takes her a long time also like a half hour to 45 minutes to finish a 5 ounce bottle (sometimes it takes her that long to finish only 4 ounces). Ive tried to switch to Level 2 but felt it was too fast. I wish there was an in between nipple. Anyway, what would you do? Try switching again or just stick with the level one. Either way the formula drips out the side of her mouth (with the Level 1 and 2).

Sometimes i think it takes her forever to drink the bottle because she might get tired of sucking so much, who knows.

What do you girls think?

TIA

Luca is over 5 months and still on a size 1 nipple. I recently tried switching him and after he played for a little while, he flat out refused to eat the bottle until I switched it back. So for now we will just stick with what he likes. I even tried another brand and he just wouldn't eat. If she seems content, just stick with it, even if it takes a while for her to eat.

Re: Nipple size opinion needed.

It really sounds like your DD should be moving up to the Size 2.. the fact she is eating so slow and sucking so hard might mean the flow isn't fast enough and she is getting frustrated while eating (not to mention sucking so hard might give her a gassy belly and you don't want that!)

I use Playtex nursers with the drop ins. They only come in slow and fast flow nipples and when I initially moved DS up to the fast flow he wasn't crazy about it... but it was taking him like 1 hr to drink a bottle with the slow flow and I couldn't take it!! After about 3-4 days he got used to the fast flow and now a bottle takes like 15 mins tops to drink!

I would give it a shot with the bigger size nipples again and see how she takes to it - good luck!

How old was he when you switched the nipple? Do you think 10 weeks is too soon?

I am fairly sure that DS was 2 1/2-3 months old when we switched him to the faster flowing nipples. I don't think your DD is too young, though - from everything I've read if they are taking that long to drink a bottle it means they are struggling to suck it down and need the larger sized nipple.
The other signs when a baby needs the bigger nipple is if they are getting drowsy during a bottle, to the point where they don't finish it.

I think its worth a shot trying the bigger nipples and seeing how your DD does! At first, I dont think any of them like the faster flow and they are thrown off but after a few days she might adjust to it!

What bottles do you use? We switched from Level 1 to Level 2 of Dr. Brown's when she was 3 1/2 months old. She went from taking 45-1 hour to taking a bottle, to like 20 minutes! At first, it came out the sides a little bit, but she needed the change.

She uses Dr. Browns.

Re: Nipple size opinion needed.

There really is no set age, IMO. Steven was in the Med. flow nipples since he was about 4 weeks. Then he was with that for quite a while and now, at almost 5 months, he needs the fast. Like Flee said, it may take a few feedings to get used to it.

It really sounds to me like she needs the next size. Also, did you try turning everything off when you feed her? I noticed that Steven eats much better with the TV/radio and anything else off. He gets way too distracted with things on.
