No amniotic fluid (very sensitive subject. Pls do not open if you are pregnant)
I just got word from a friend that our friend, at 21 weeks has no amniotic fluid. I don't know the details but I was told she might have to have a D&C. Is there any hope for her? Is it worth getting a second opinion? I called her and she couldn't talk. Said she'd call me back. I don't know what to do or say. This is her second child. Her DD just turned 1 so this pregnancy was a surprise. I feel terrible right now.

I know this isn't the same exact thing, but my water broke at 32 weeks. I didn't lose all the fluid. They put me in the hospital on iv fluids. I was able to produce enough fluid that I held out for 2 weeks before delivering. Did she see a high risk doctor? I would definitely get another sono and opinion

I would definitely go and speak with a high risk doctor. At 21 weeks there should be another option besides D&C. I truly hope everything works out for your friend

One of my really good friends gave birth to her daughter at 24 weeks due to no amniotic fluid...Her daughter is now almost 3 and is doing wonderful. She was in the NICU for months when she was born tho
I would tell her to definately get a second opinion! She delivered at St. Catherines if this helps

If her water didn't break then having no fluid @only 21wks might mean there is something wrong with the development of the baby. I would always recommend a second opinion considering the grave prognosis.

Re: No amniotic fluid (very sensitive subject. Pls do not open if you are pregnant)
Thanks ladies. I spoke with her. Her water did break, slowly. It didnt cross her mind that that was what was happening bc shes only 21w. She thought she was peeing a lot. She believes its from a med she was prescribed last week bc bf that she had all of the fluid and all was fine.
She did see high risk today and has another consult tomorrow. I guess if she has been 2 weeks further she would have had a chance.
I feel horrendous. I am so bad in these situations. I wish I knew the right thing to say.

Thanks ladies, she lives in Queens but still visits her obgyn upstate from when she used to live there. The baby is still alive. She told me she feels him moving . I guess that is the worst part, knowing he is still alive.

Thats what I think but they told her if she doesn't terminate he can be born with birth defects and she can get an infection which can lead to a hysterectomy. I am still praying.

I don't know. I asked her if she could stay in the hospital and something could be done. She didn't say anything really and I didn't want to press it and make her feel worse.
Excuse my ignorance but does this really work and give a baby a chance at least?
Thank you so much ladies for your prayers.

Sounds like something else might be going on that she isn't saying I can't see why she wouldn't be in the ER right away doing everything necessary to help this little one.

My friend like i said above had the same thing, slowly lossing her fluid for 2 weeks, thought she was peeing...she went in to the hospital and they put her on an iv and she delivered her baby a week later and all was fine
there has to be something to be done, espeically if she can still feel the baby

Yes! This is how Im thinking! I know if that was me I wouldnt be waiting another day for a second opinion, I would be in the ER demanding to be hooked up! I really can't see why they didnt t least send her to do this to see if it would help before suggesting the D&C.

Re: No amniotic fluid (very sensitive subject. Pls do not open if you are pregnant)
I guess something is a little fuzzy. She is under the impression there is no hope. Or at least thats what she was told. Shes going tomorrow to the doc to check if the fluid came back at all. The doc told her there was a slight chance. Other than that, she wasn't told to go to the hospital at all.

Re: No amniotic fluid (very sensitive subject. Pls do not open if you are pregnant)
i think she needs to see about 7 other doctors down here and NOW. there is absolutely no reason that she shouldn't be in the hospital now trying to save her baby. i dont understand why she isn't getting second and third and fourth opinions and trying to do whatever she can!!! if it were me and i was told that, i would leave one office and find another dr office or even the ER. it just doesn't sound like the whole story... she leaked out all of the fluid and that's it? the pregnancy is going to be over even though the baby is still alive and kicking (literally)?! im sorry but she should be in the hospital with doctors figuring out how to save her baby. im baffled and saddened for her. tons of

Thank you so much. I agree with you. I asked her if she wanted a second opinion and she told me she saw this and that doctor that her ob sent her to. Probably the high risk doc that he works with I am thinking. She told me that he is great and people travel to see him, etc. I tried as hard as I could to stress a second opinion without sounding like I was lecturing her. I don't know. I know this sounds crazy. I am going to contact her tomorrow and try to stress her going to the hospital again. I just don't want her to feel like shes doing the wrong thing.

This is exactly how I feel.
To the OP- I know you said you didnt want to be pushy about the subject, which is completely undestandable, but maybe given what she's been told she's not thinking clearly and logically? If you dont want to question her again about it, could you talk to her DH about it?
I just know that I could never sit at home and wait for another dr.'s opinion. But I also know I would be beside myself if I heard the same news she did. Perhaps she just needs some guidance? Ugh, what a horrible, horrible situation.
