Non Fiction Readers - Favorite Books???
I am not a big fiction book reader...usually only in summer time. I love my non-fiction books though. I am a big fan of true crime, history and WWII books. Thought I would start a thread so that we could share our favorite non-fiction books.
I just fiinished D-Day by Stephen Ambroise. It's a Loooooooong book, but so well written and really brings you back to the day.
I am now reading The Politician, by Andrew Young which is on John Edwards. Waited for it to come out on paperback and thought it was going to be bad, but it's actually pretty well written and holds your attention.
Other favorites of mine include Clapton, by Eric Clapton; The Greastest Generation by Tom Brakow and the Last Lion by Ted Kennedy. All were well written and really interesting. Also there is a book called The Cases That Haunt Us. It's about 13 major unsolved crimes and I literally could not put it down. Still available...I saw it at the book store the other day. If you are a true crime reader you will love it.
Feel free to share yours. I am always looking for a good book!

I do enjoy fiction but I am also a huge true-crime fan. I love Ann Rule and one of the most fascinating books I've ever read was Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi. It's the story about the Manson murders and he was the prosecutor.
Right now I'm reading a non-fiction book about the disappearance of Etan Patz.

Re: Non Fiction Readers - Favorite Books???
The ones that stand out the most in my memory are:
The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy - his memoir of a year of teaching on an island off the South Carolina coast. The school is so disadvantaged and forgotten, you can hardly believe it's in the US.
Life and Death in Shanghai by Nien Chang - a story of a woman who was imprisoned unjustly during the Chinese Cultural Revolution - it's about what happened to her before, during and after her imprisonment.
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer - story of a climb up Mt. Everest that ends in disaster.
Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich - journalist who goes "undercover" to see if she can live on a minimum wage job. She works in 3 different jobs - waitressing, working for a cleaning service and working at Walmart.
Paula by Isabel Allende - memoir of her experience caring for her gravely ill daughter. I am biased on this one, Allende is one of my favorites.
I realized after writing all of this that none are all that uplifting, but most are very interesting, some fascinating.
If you are interested in Historical fiction, The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alverez are also great reads.

Have you read Devil in the White City by Eric Larsen? I LOVED it. Or The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skoot. I really like non-fiction--I'll have to go through my goodreads and find more for you!

Devil in the White City was EXCELLENT! I could not put it down; it was literally more suspenseful than any fiction book I have read!
Also John Adams was great!
