North Carolina Girls......

Do you like it here??? Do you miss NY and would you ever go back??? Can you see yourself living here forever????

I am on the fence with this whole move... while I am really starting to dislike it here and DH loves it. He doesn't want to go back to NY. I am so much of a city girl and feel so 'misplaced' here. It's just not all I thought it would be..... besides the homes being gorgeous for next to nothing, I find it lonely and I find the people either intrusive or snobbish in my area. Any opinions????..................

I love it here, I could not see myself going back to NY (and I always considered myself a true new yorker)...it is just too expensive and I honestly do not see the appeal to NY like I used to...the people are cranky, the weather sucks and the traffic Chat Icon

I am very happy here and am glad that we made the move...sorry you are feeling homesick Chat Icon

Re: North Carolina Girls......

I would really ove to hear more opinions on this subject. DH wants to move but I am firmly planted here....

What is the job market like?
Other than the homes, what's the cost of living? Groceries, gas, insurance?

Any info is appreciated, I really don't want to leave my fam....

Re: North Carolina Girls......

FH and I briefly looked into moving into the Raleigh area (never went to visit, just online research).

I would definitely secure a job before moving. Girls I know moving down south who didn't move with jobs had a hard time finding decent jobs, due to the influx of people down there.

Well I worked on Wall St. for years in Trading, DH is a stockbroker. So we moved here to work at our co. branch but DH went out on his own and I decided to become a SAHM after having a baby in Nov. As far as the job market goes, I guess it's decent but the pay isn't as much as the city. I don't know If I would like working here, but if I had to I would I guess.

Groceries are WAYYYYY more expensive here .. I pay alot more here for food. We have high grocery bills and you can't get what you can in NY.

Gas is a little lower than NY and so is car insurance. BUT we did get hit with county tax bill for our cars which is absurd . We have to pay over 400 bucks a year in county taxes just for our cars!!! I was shocked!! We moved down with a car and bought one here.

Bills are moderate..not bad. Nails... well I am used to getting a fill - in and pedicure for 30 bucks in NY... here it costs me 55 bucks without a tip. So ... 65bucks.

Vet... charged me alot for a visit and I never paid nearly as much in nY

The groomers are double the price maybe a littke under double.

Certain areas are really nice some are OK... you have to know where to go.

I moved down here pregnant and had my baby here. I really disliked the Ob/gyns and it is very inpersonal. I never had the same Dr. and when I went into labor I didn't know who I'd get. I had 2 Dr.'s I never met deliver my daughter. I have to honestly say though the hospital care was AMAZINGGGGG!!!! I don't think we would have gotten that care in NY.

The Pediatrician is pretty decent but as well I find them very rushed and impersonal. It's just something.............I can't pit my finger on it...lol.

I don't want to sound negative.... I am sorry if I do, but this is all true and my feelings are just what I feel.

Bottom line is... I guess Ijust miss eveything back home and although it may be a better place ot raise a family.... I just feel like I would lie my kids to grow up as NY'ers because I did and there's so much to see and do in the city. I just miss home....Chat Icon

Thanks!
I had heard that the only real savings is in RE, and the rest is more $$$$, which it sounds like it is.

DH's union can transfer, but he would make almost HALF what he makes here, his salary doesn't transfer.....Chat Icon
I would need to start over there too...

Re: North Carolina Girls......

How long have you been gone? We left LI to move to VA and it took a good year before I felt settled...and still am homesick for NY at times but since my family is here now it's gotten much easier. There is defiintely a cultural adjustment that takes place, but now when I go back to NY I find it rushed, hectic and crazy. Although sometimes I do still miss that!!

can you take a class (pottery) or a mommy-and-me class to meet new people?

My sister was lonely in VA, so she took pottery classes and scrapbooking in her free time.

I feel the same exact way. I absolutely love my life here. I get to stay home with my son every day and enjoy life. I have met a group of mommies and we have playdates every week. I have a whole new set of friends, and still keep in contact with the old ones. I have my sil and bil who I love and can see whenever I want. (Usually every other week, or else I probably wouldn't love them that much Chat Icon) My dh loves his job and we love the area we live in. I have everything here that Long Island does (at half the price), but I can also drive 15 miles and go to horse farms and country. It is wonderful. Yes my parents are in NY, but I could never ever turn back. Who knows, maybe one day they will retire and move south, but if they never do it still wouldn't change things. Right now it is 61 degrees out and absolutely beautiful. I am getting ready to take my son and the dog to the park. I wouldn't trade my life for anything.

I am sorry you are feeling homesick. I think it helps to make friends and get out. I know a great NC mommy website if you are interested, or maybe you can take a class with your little one? Meeting new people I am sure would really help. Chat Icon

Re: North Carolina Girls......

Dh and I moved to VA 6 months ago. my DH really likes it here but I am having a hard time settling in here. I miss everyone in NY. DH say he will never move back there. Food prices are about the same here but really good fruit & veg are hard to come by. Getting my hair & nails done are more. Getting my dog groomed is less. Gas is less. Property taxes are much less here. We where paying over $8k in NY here $2500. I took a huge pay cut but we cut our mortage in 1/2. People are nicer here & the traffic is less.

So all in all life is better now if I could get over missing my friend I would be ok.

VA girls where do you live? Would anyone like to have a GTG?

Re: North Carolina Girls......

I've been down here almost 8 years now and I would never move back to LI. For us it's waaaay too expensive. I live in the Triangle area and love it! Though for us we don't make enough money but that goes back to us not having college degrees/certifications, etc. It's definitely way more affordable. But it really depends on what makes you happy. Being on Wall St. and then coming here is a big difference. For us, we HATED the city and only visited it a few times in the whole 20+ years we grew up there. So if you love the city this is definitely much slower for you and I can see how you don't like it. I do miss some family and I definitely miss the food, but a lot of our family live all over out of NY anyway it doesn't make much sense to go back. I do get lonely a lot of the times even though I have 2 kids. I don't really have any "girlfriends" I hang out with. It's just me and my boys and dogs. My DH on the other hand gets to hang out with guy friends a lot. Chat Icon Even with this issue, I still wouldn't want to move back. I've been down here too long and I'm used to it for the most part now. That's one thing I can say is that it takes a while to get used to how things are run down here and the people. I actually haven't run into snobby people more slow people. You have to be willing to give it a chance since it takes time to get used to it. But I don't know what it's like to be a city girl so...

ETA: That right now it's 65 degrees out and I'm loving it!

Anyway, this is JMO! Chat Icon

Re: North Carolina Girls......

Thanks everyone.........

I know I need to get out more.... maybe I am feeling depressed here as well. I am at a point where I want to go home. We are only here 7 months. I loved it in the beginnng but now... it's just miserable. We had 2 friends move down with us as well (DH's business partner/ best friend). When they moved down with us his wife was pregnant as well and they had a son. They bought a huge house, gorgeous... but they moved back to NY 2 weeks ago. Sold the house and went home to NY. The night they were leaving I was so upset and a little jealous. DH is so insistent on not moving back....and keeps telling me to give it a chance but as I try ...I just start to get upset. I even get upset watching TV shows that show NY and stuff.... it's that bad!!! Do I sound loony?????????? Chat Icon
I miss my friends and I have some family there. My mom, dad and grandparents moved to Fl. a few years ago so they have been away from me for awhile. I haven't even Christened my daughter yet becuase we have no one down here and I am assuming we are going to have to have people fly down.
I hope I don't sound too crazy...
