North Carolina Parents Please Come In!
I have been doing some internet research on what are the best school districts in NC, so I can make a more focused 7 year plan for our move. I was very alarmed to find out that NC allows corporal punishment in their schools! Is this something that is widely practiced in your particular school district? I understand it is up to each school district whether or not they allow paddling, but what exactly are the infractions that would call for this type of punishment? Though I am all for the teacher/principal having control in the classroom, this disturbs me. I fear that if this were to happen to my child, I would subsequently be arrested for kicking the person's asss who did this to her. Thoughts?

Don't know about schools, etc.. All I know is i we are neighbors in 7 yrs and if ANYONE other than me or DH EVR came near my child in a physical way other than a hug, I think I would kill them where they stood

Re: North Carolina Parents Please Come In!
We had the same concerns when we were looking to move to NC. We live in Union County (outside of Charlotte) and it's not allowed here. I used to teach in an elementary school before I had DD. This is what the website states about corporal punishment:
The Board of Education prohibits corporal punishment, believing that other consequences are more appropriate and effective for teaching self control. No principal, assistant principal, teacher, substitute teacher, any other school system employee, or volunteer may use corporal punishment to discipline any student. Corporal punishment is defined as the physical use of a hand, paddle, or other instrument to administer corrective discipline such as paddling, spanking, or otherwise striking a child. School personnel may use reasonable force in the exercise of lawful authority to restrain or correct pupils and maintain order to prevent immediate threats of harm to person or property: (1) To quell a disturbance threatening injury to others; (2) To obtain possession of weapons or other dangerous objects on the person, or within the control, of a student; (3) For self-defense; (4) For the protection of persons or property; or (5) To maintain order on school property, in the classroom, or at a school related activity on or off school property.

Re: North Carolina Parents Please Come In!
I'm in Wake County, which encompasses Raleigh, and this is their policy on the matter:
6525 CORPORAL punishment
Believing that other forms of discipline are more appropriate with children of all ages, the Wake County Board of Education prohibits the use of corporal punishment. No principal, assistant principal, teacher, substitute teacher, any other school system employee, or volunteer may use corporal punishment to discipline any student.
6525.1 Corporal punishment is all forms of physical punishment including, but not limited to, spanking, paddling, or slapping.
6525.2 School personnel may use reasonable force to control behavior or to remove a person from the scene in those situations when necessary:
1. To quell a disturbance threatening injury to others.
2. To obtain possession of weapons or other dangerous objects on the person, or within the control, of a student.
3. For self-defense.
4. For the protection of persons or property.
5. To maintain order on school property, in the classroom, or at a school-related activity on or off school property.
HTH!
The Wake County Board of Ed has been in the news for other reasons lately... they're putting back zoned schooling and it has parents up in arms because they basically think segregation is going to happen again. Steven Colbert commented on it the other day. I don't have any children who are school-aged yet, but our local schools are supposed to be fabulous which is why we bought where we are. We'll see what happens.

Re: North Carolina Parents Please Come In!
Hi! I live in Wake County and that does not go on here. While it is still on the books, it only happens in REALLY rural areas, that I doubt you would be living in. Anywhere around the Triangle and Charlotte, would be fine.
Like I said, I live in Wake county and have taught in the school system here. I have also worked in the Chapel Hill-Carborro School System (the best in this area, in my humble opinion ), and have some knowledge of Orange County Schools, Durham Schools, and Johnston County Schools.
So, if you have any other questions about the school systems, or this area, feel free to FM.

You can check to see if the proposal is going to affect your household by checking your node that you are in. Just put your house street in then your number to check your node Here then once you find your node click the link all the way at the bottom called Draft Proposal, it will tell you which school is affected or if any at all! We are currently in the process of moving down and when we were looking for homes this was a concern for us, although it doesn't affect us for next year when DS starts school anything can happen in the Wake School District, but at least its a good one!

WOW that's a very good site to know about! So I guess no change! But I know some of the mothers at the gym are totally up in arms about the proposal, whether it effects them or not. I can see why they are upset, but I'm glad to know it doesn't directly effect our household. I like the schools we live by! Plus we're just under 1 mile from our elementary & middle schools, which I think is really nice. I wonder if DD will be a walker like I was.
