Re: North Hempstead OK's plan to euthanize geese

My Dad is a Hunter and has been hunting geese and Duck for years. I actually enjoy eating goose once in awhile. Its just like eating turkey or chicken. And my Dad has always given the duck or geese to people who actually eat it. Actually our 7-11 guy pays my dad for any duck. I have had it since I am young. I dont agree with just killing them. If it was used for food I would see no harm in it. But I think just euthanizing them is sad. The problem with the Trapping and Spaying them is no Vet wnats to take up the cost. Even with Feral cats it becomes expensive. There are a few rescue groups that do this but like I said they are hard to find and with so many they can't do them all. Also I do want to mention Geese are not friendly!! Especially during mating season!! We have been chased by them and hissed at and they will snap at you if you get too close so be careful if you have children.

I agree with this person:
"It's just something you live with," Wolfgang Hiller said. "Some people, everything's got to be perfect for them."

People have to realize that we SHARE the planet with animals, not allow them to exist.

Exactly!!

I think people are the nuisance!

hundreds of pounds of poop doesn't sound like a problem...it sounds like compost.

how about they use this as an opportunity to create JOBS to have people clean the parks.

But that would cost more than $8,000 so you know that won't happen. Chat Icon

I thought about that but what would they say about having inmates working in their beautiful goose filled parks? Chat Icon

Canada Geese have become a real pest in a lot of places. They no longer migrate because they have everything they need here all year long. They can be VERY aggressive not to mention their waste can cause all sorts of issues. They are very dangerous to airplanes and there have been steps taken to decrease their numbers around major airports.

I don't know what the solution is but population control is important.

They are NOT migrating because of our mild winters.

This is certainly one of the reasons as well..though our last few winters have not been mild at all...and still they stay.

Like I said, I don't know what the solution is but something has to be done.

I am too! Most humans are omnivores. We kill cows , chickens, pigs, turkeys etc. for good so how is this situation different? They are donating the meat to people who are hungry and desperately need it not throwing it away. I think it is a good solution and don't understand the outcry especially in light of the fact that most people eat meat.

it's the fact that they are doing it with the reason of the animals being a "nuisance". It makes us sound so out of touch with nature.

I eat meat...don't really eat goose though. don't know too many people who do eat goose but if it's being donated that's great but the idea of killing animals simply because they are a nuisance doesn't sit well with me.

I'd rather them kill & eat animals that are nuisance animals then raise animals, pump them full of hormones or feed them genetically modified food to feed us.

I see your point but how do we know these geese are healthy? They're living in the wild, eating god knows what. Who knows what diseases they have! I know, I know... same can probably be said for any cow, chicken, pig, etc. we eat everyday. I guess to me it's out of sight, out of mind. Still skeeves me!!

I'm pretty sure they'll have to test them if they're going to serve them up as food.

If the geese population drops (and with the amount of goose crap on the grounds of every flat surface), then it will be out of sight, out of mind too.

I lived in a agated community here and they were a real problem. Their poop is toxic and they a nasty mean animal.

There were days I could not walk to my car because they were standing near it and would hiss and try to attack me.

Re: North Hempstead OK's plan to euthanize geese

Imagine if animals could euthanize US when we became a nuisance. Chat Icon

And again, I know there are sometimes very valid reasons for population control. It is very upsetting that in this case they don't seem to be citing any legitimate reasons, at least IMO.
