ITA Also, their policy is not to *hold* a dog, so if you are interested, be prepared to leave with the dog. Bring a vet's name & your references with you & make sure that the references will be available at that time to take the call.

it helps. They have a vet they refer to, but it does help your app if you already have one.

Any area you would want the vet? I have several that I know around LI.

North Shore will require atleast 2 references and a vet check, and you're not leaving until they get a hold of all of them. It can take hours, atleast those were my two experiences.

Did you try Bide-a-wee or Town of Hempstead animal shelter? Both are in wantagh. They are very close to you. Just a suggestion. You could always check it out, see what they have.

Good Luck finding a pet.

Re: North Shore Animal League

little shelter is one of the best shelters. they keep unwanted dogs and unadoptable dogs in a seperate kennel so dogs aren't euthanized. they don't always have puppies, but they do have tons of dogs. i definetely recommend them

depending on the type of dog you're mostly looking for, I think I could help you out and gear you towards the right shelter.

I definetely recommend Town Shelter in Wantagh or in Port Washington because those dogs are the first to be euthanized so you'll really be saving a life where as Little Shelter, NSAL & bideawee are non kill shelters.

Bideawee is awesome too but doesn't really have that many dogs. They're located right next door to the Wantagh town shelter so you can hit both spots at once

NSAL does take a bit but you can get pre screened and even if you don't see a dog you like then, you have up until 3 months to find a dog and not have to go through the process all over again. The best time to go would be friday morning. they get all of their puppies around then and you'd get your first pick pretty much. I've gone on Monday mornings and they have like 5 puppies left. They always have great adult dogs though.

Good luck and if you need any more help let me know

p.s. I adopted Jameson from the Town Shelter in Huntington (it's called LAP) and they're great. She came with her rabies shot, food, license & collar/leash.

I actually went to bideawee with a friend to adopt a cat today. They had some nice dogs. They had (2) 9 week old puppies that were adorable. They are on petfinder.com

Aren't they cute! I was strong, I left without them

Re: North Shore Animal League

we adopted a puppy in OCtober. We went on a Sunday morning. We needed 2 references, they only called the first one. They did not ask us for a vets name.

I suggest you go early because the puppies get adopted fast on weekends

Don't go here. FM for details if you'd like.

Go to South Bellmore Vet Group on Merrick Road in Bellmore. The doctors are great, and the facility is pristine.
